TO HEAR Colonel Ishak Ismail, 46, tell it, his decision to become a regular officer in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) was greeted with some incredulity.
He recalled on Thursday that someone asked him pointedly: 'This is your name - you sure you want to sign on?'
He has replied in the affirmative many times in the last 28 years.
On Thursday, his time in the military was capped in historic fashion - in his becoming the first Malay general in the SAF.
He was one of five colonels at the head of the SAF's annual promotion list and gained the rank of Brigadier-General or Rear-Admiral (One Star).
The other four were: Col (Dr) Benjamin Seet and Col Lee Shiang Long from the Army; the Republic of Singapore Navy's Col Tan Wee Beng; and Col Kwek Kok Kwong of the Republic of Singapore Air Force.
The five were among 464 from all three arms - both regulars and operationally-ready National Servicemen - presented with their certificates of promotion at a ceremony at Bukit Gombak Camp on Thursday.
The promotions take effect from July 1, which is SAF Day.
For Col Ishak, moving to the rank of Brigadier-General is reward for what he calls a consuming passion: Developing people to their potential.
Calling himself a 'servant leader', he said: 'What gets me up in the morning and gives me the passion every day is the same reason I became a regular officer: Being able to influence people to something that they may not see themselves accomplishing.'
He has served in numerous appointments and is now the Commander of the 6th Singapore Division. Last year, he received the Public Administration Medal (Silver) (Military) Medal.

What a big wayang show from SAF to show that they do not acknowledge racial discriminations.
Being the 6 Dic CG, is as good as a 2nd rated general. BEing a malay regular in SAF, their only troops exposure is infantry and at best guards.
Without armour, artillery or logistic commands, it's pretty much GG.

.... And if only 1 day .... the SAF put a Malay to be commander of the SAF then it will not be WY only......But look like got to wait long.....long

Gonna take longer than that for a Malay CDF. Doubt if this will happen during the reign of PM Lee Jr.
This is just a project, just as the 1st lady Co, Maj Lim Sok Bee of 21 SA IIRC, somehting like 7 yrs ago.

Regardless, the SAF DID promote a malay to one of the highest senior ranks available in the force. Even if it's a General of the supply Depot, it is STILL a General. Let us look at this positively instead of downplaying the significance of this milestone.
It MAY be wayang, but at least it's a NICE wayang.
