Is the car engine efficiency almost the same regardless of speed? Does travelling slower mean I use petrol more efficiently?

There is a different optimum speed for every car. Both above and below this optimum speed, efficiency decreases.

I would think of it as more of an optimum rpm. Speed is relative, depending on which gear you're on, particularly for manual cars.

lifespan and efficiency increases when you travel at consistent speeds. Like Singapore roads, after a few hundred meters traffic lights you brake then accelerate then brake, wear is more.

But are significant differences in petrol usage? I could choose to drive faster at 110km/h and get to destination faster or at 80km/h and get there slower (assuming highway driving). Which is the better option?

Re: Same amount of petrol: 60km/h for 1hr vs 120km/h for 0.5h?

Well... Was wondering about that myself so I did an experiment of my own somewhere around a month ago. Car is a 2005 Nissan Sunny N16 1.6M (5-speed manual transmission). Not the most fuel-efficient of cars out there especially considering its age. Journeys are all the same - drive to work (North to Central, I don't work in town), and then drive back home after work.

Sticking with the "shift early, keep revs below 2,500 rpm" theory, meaning I shift up the gears early (shifting up a gear before hitting 2,000 rpm) and I don't exceed 95kph when cruising on expressway (just nice 2,500 rpm or slightly less), I top up petrol once every 14 days. Each top-up costs me around $50-60 (Shell 95). Usually quarter tank when I top up.

But when I experimented with a harder-revving driving style and higher cruising speeds (slightly higher, not enough to get summon for speeding, but definitely over 2,500 rpm), I would have to top up after 12 days instead of 14. Surprisingly, my journey times remained around the same.

So these days I drive slowly and enjoy the ride. No reason to chiong like siao... I mean, I was never a really fast driver, but a slightly faster driving style did show quite an obvious increase in fuel consumption. I suspect the difference becomes more obvious the faster you go because a car uses more fuel at 5,000 rpm than say, 3,000 rpm...
