SINGAPORE: Singapore will send a 44-strong athletics team to the upcoming SEA Games in Indonesia, the largest since the 1993 edition.

Singapore also hopes to win six medals this time round. In 2007, it won two gold and one silver medals.

The team heading for the Games comprises 28 athletes and 16 officials.

Donning national colours, they are determined to make their mark. Leading the charge is 42-year-old veteran James Wong who is gunning for gold number nine in discus.

He is also hoping for new faces to get on the winner's podium and do Singapore proud.

He said: "We want to have more medals coming from some up-and-coming athletes who are aspiring to become champions in their own rights. We are hoping for some surprises. Some of them are young and they are coming in for experience."

Among them is 23-year-old Wan Lay Chi, who is competing in her third SEA Games. The shot putter and discus thrower said: "I am training full time now and I have a great coach. So far my training has been quite good. So I am confident that I can get a medal."

Singapore is also fielding the largest number of young athletes this time around.

Eight of those heading for Indonesia are under the age of 20 and they will form the core team that will help Singapore achieve the target of being top three in athletics in the region over the next few years.

Meanwhile, a mock relay race was held as part of the launch of a handbook on who's competing in the Indonesian Games.

President of the Singapore Athletics Association Tang Weng Fei joined three officials in the race.

The Singapore team leaves for Palembang on 9 November, two days before the start of the SEA Games.
