Seoul Travel Tips(Free & Easy)

Just came back from Seoul last month and i'd like to share some tips if you're travelling there free & easy there any time soon

1. Book your flight in advance.
Yup, if you plan to save on flight tickets, always book in advance. especially for budget airlines. For me, i booked Scoot airline 5 months before date. however, there is a transit at Taipei airport. The flight ticket cost me SGD$600+ per pax inclusive of 25 kg baggage and 1 meal on board.
*Dont forget your travel buddies, neck pillow and eye mask for long flights is definitely a must.
12.15pm: Singapore > Taipei (1 hr) > Seoul. 9.30pm

2. Lots of Research.
If youre like me, who want to explore as many places as possible, research is mandatory. I did research almost every week, planning as much as possible, this is to ensure your smooth journey when you can barely understand their language over there. Always double check the correct information such as train stations and bus stations. It gets a little confusing there. If you have problem searching for the answer you want, i will suggest you to post your questions to Visit Korea site. They will reply to your question within 2-5 days!

3. Book your Accommodation.

A comfort and convenient accommodation is going to help if you are going on heavy shopping. Make sure your location is convenient and a short walking distance. As much as i want to save on flight ticket and accommodation, i used AirBnb, thank god for this site. Because the host are able to communicate in English which made it a whole lot easier for us. I was putting up at Jays NineHouse in Hongdae area for 7 nights and cost about SGD500+. Its so much cheaper than putting up at a hotel.
Id strongly recommend to use Airbnb!

4. Pre-book your entrance/ train tickets.

By pre-book i mean booking tickets online before you depart. I did research and i booked my KTX train tickets online (to Namiseom Island) and also my bus transport + ticket to Everland theme park via Funtastic Korea. I must say it saved me a lot of trouble! Ive read a lot on reviews and travelogue on Everland transport, but it was quite a hassle. And the price only differs from about 10,000 - 15,000 KRW. I boarded my bus at Hongdae, straight to Everland! Problem solved with Funtastic Korea!

5. Shopping Discounts, Coupons

If youre a shopaholic, then this is your heaven. Search for shopping coupons online and print them out. They will come in handy during your shopping trips. Ive printed quite a lot of them and yes, i managed to use them. Such as discount to Lotte World theme park, Lotte Duty Free Shops, Entrance tickets to Petite France, and a whole lot more. You will realize how much all these coupons have saved! I got my discount coupons here : www.vkc.or.kr/en/benefit/coupon.

6. Getting a sim card in Seoul / WiFi Egg

Because i am travelling with my cousin, a sim card was essential for us just in case we lost each other so we could call. I purchased my sim card at Changi Airport Terminal 2, cost about SGD$47.00 for iPhone 5s (micro nano sim card), the other sim cards cost slightly cheaper. My data usage was 1GB and also 10,000 KRW amount for calls. I only used about 800 mb for 7 days (my accommodation provides free wi-fi) which i only used the data when im outside and searching for information.

7. Install a Korean guide app
I installed a korean guide app on my smartphone just in case id need to use it and yes! i really did need to use it. In Seoul, a lot of strangers come asking me in Korean for directions. They had no idea were tourist so we had a difficult time communicating. There comes my handy app. I dont understand Korean, used this phrase every time someone approached us. It will also help you when youre ordering food or purchasing goods. Such as the numbers in Korean, or asking directions for washrooms.

8. Train station map.
Luckily for me, i came prepared with a print out of subway stations map in A3 and A4 size. Because you will have no time to look at the map when youre at their busy stations. Always carry one with you so you could browse when youre on the train or before leaving your hotel/house. It will also help you if youre lost somewhere, just show your map and point the station to someone you approached and ask them Eodiseo? (it means where in Korean)

9. VAT Tax Refunds

Always remember to ask for your tax refunds at the counter where you purchased your goods. It will look like a receipt and some comes with an envelope. At the end of day, segregate your receipts by the blue and orange labels, so that when you arrive at the airport you dont have to go through the hassle to sort them out again. *The queue for tax refunds could take some time so, arrive at the airport slightly earlier before your check-in.

10. Korean Etiquette & Language
Koreans love their country, a lot. As tourists, when we visit their home we have to be gracious about it. Some will ask where are you from, then express that you love Korea too. This will leave them have a good impression on the tourists.

Stand on the right side of escalator during peak hours. Koreans are always moving in fast pace, even the elderly. Never, block their way, because it can upset them.

Always Thank them after every purchase you made or service they given you. You will hear "Kamsahamnida" everywhere. so you will have to follow suit and use this phrase everywhere. Its a form of respect to the Koreans.

Lastly, don't have to worry about not able to speak Korean. If you're visiting shopping at Myeong Dong, majority of them speak Chinese.

I hope these tips will help you some in planning for your trip to Seoul! I will be writing my travelogue very soon as well as my itinerary. Feel free to ask me questions if you have any questions!

Re: Seoul Travel Tips(Free & Easy)

Thank you for sharing this tips . Seoul is the seat of government and it's as crowded and competitive, if more homogeneous, as any other developed megacity. Seoulites shop at fancy boutiques and posh department stores, lies a maze of narrow alleyways filled with innumerable wittyshops selling everything from dried squid to cell-phone paraphernalia.
