Shooting: Jasmine Ser aims to surpass two-gold target

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Shooting Association (SSA) announced on Tuesday they have set a target of two gold medals - one from pistol and the other rifle - for next month's SEA Games, but Jasmine Ser feels it is a little conservative.

"I'm sure the team can get more than that," she told Today. "Sally (Li Yafei) and I are almost on par now for the 10m, and the 50m women are reasonably good.

"The pistol team is really good so there should be more than one gold each from pistol and rifle."

Ser returned from her last two outings at the SEA Games with a gold medal, and she is determined to keep her 100 per cent record going.

Singapore's reigning Sportswoman of the Year is a member of the 10-strong shooting team that will do battle at the Jakabaring Sports City in Palembang from Nov 12 to 16.

With the organisers deciding not to host team events for shooting, the Republic's marksmen will be aiming for individual glory in nine of the 14 events at the Games.

Ser, 21, will be competing in the 10m Air Rifle, an event she won at the 2007 Games in Korat, Thailand, and the 50m 3-Position.

Under the guidance of coach Kirill Ivanov, who joined the Singapore Shooting Association (SSA) six months ago, Ser claims she has matured and is ready to fight for gold.

"In the past year, I've faced so many different situations in competition and coach Kirill's been teaching me the necessary skills to deal with these situations," Ser said on Tuesday. "I've definitely matured in my thinking and am more focused, and we're both on the right track."

The 2011 SEA Games will be jointly-held in Jakarta and Palembang from Nov 11 to 22.

The SSA held an "open house" on Tuesday at SAFRA Yishun where athletes and officials met up with the media to talk about their build-up to the Games.

Ser's strongest competition in the 10m Air Rifle could well be her 17-year-old team-mate Li Yafei, who will make her debut at this year's Games.

The Raffles Institution student teamed up with Cheng Jian Huan and Ser to win silver in the women's 10m Air Rifle event at last week's Asian Airgun Championships in Kuwait.

Said Yafei: "I'm preparing as I normally do for any competition, I'm just making sure I do not get too stressed about it."

Veteran shooter and reigning Sportsman of the Year Gai Bin leads the charge for the men's pistol team, and will take part in four events. In Kuwait last week, the 43-year-old narrowly missed out on making the final in the 10m Air Pistol event and feels he's on form.

"Our year-round preparations are to ensure we are able to perform during competition," said Gai Bin.

"It's a pity there will not be team events at the SEA Games as those events have delivered many gold medals for us."

"For sure there will be more pressure on us in individual events as there is little margin for error, but we've been training hard to ensure we maintain a good composure and stay relaxed during competition," he added.

Pistol coach Vladimir Galiabovitch thinks these are exciting times for Singapore shooters.

"The main issue for top shooters in the world is how they manage themselves in competition and the decisions they make in competition environment," he said. "Our athletes have been given the opportunity to develop tactical skills in competition environments and we're confident they will be able to deliver at the SEA Games."
