Actually nothing wrong with saying that you are 中国人 or 北京人 if you are chinese and you are proud of your heritage, even if you are Singaporean. But you must really be confident of your chinese knowledge. There are probably not many people who can proudly proclaim that they are 中国人 because they cannot speak Chinese well even though they are Chinese.
It will be more correct to say that we are chinese singaporean - 新加坡华族 if we identify more with Singapore than with China.
For her I think it will be a difficult position to say that she is 新加坡华族 because she's not born and bred here during her childhood years. So I think 中国人 is fine. She can be still considered as politically correct because she did not say 中国公民, which means chinese citizen. 中国人 does not mean chinese citizen, it is just that our (inferior) standards of chinese around here makes us think that country+人 means the person is a citizen of somewhere. While it can be generally true, it depends on the context.
Singapore don't allow dual citizenship yet.

she shld say i'm from china PrEvIouSly | But if she say she is Singaporean, it will upset most of the China ppl and most of the singaporean will find her "xu wei". If she say she is from China, everyone in China is happy and onli a handful of singaporean will unhappy coz i think most singaporean wont find it anything wrong to that sentence.
Beside, its a fact that she is born in Beijing and her origin is china mah. If u were her, i guess u would have say the same. Dun tell me u dare to say in front of the camera "We r singapore!"

I'm proud to be chinese even though I am from Singapore too. So in that way, she will avoid upsetting her China friends and Singapore friends. Very smart move.
It's a tough position for her and I respect her for her guts at least.

Have to agree its pretty hard on her to please everyone. Well, a China journalist asked her (abit scarcastic) who did she think would support her during her semi-final match against her chinese opponent this morning, she said....4 million Singaporeans.....kinda warmed my heart.

In fact right, you all should know that those people who not in total support of China in the past will dread to call themselves a citizen of china. (Usually those human rights activists.) Now I don't know if times have changed, but just a little thing to know.
Instead of putting her as down as a not-so-true Singaporean, we should actually give support to her if we have a heart. The China people are giving her so much trouble for her decision. Since she decided to give support for us, we should support her too.
For those people who decide to switch loyalties from Singapore, we should not be so mean to them either, just let them be. It makes us look better than those people in China criticising too.

Singapore don't allow dual citizenship yet. | ya, never really think b4 the difference between 中国人 and 中国公民. What u say veri true. Beside, ppl in other country seldom say they are "Hua Ren" too, onli few country say Hua Ren. Most of them call themselves 中国人, which mean Hua Ren to them. Different Interpretation.

N beside, if Li Jia Wei was just a normal PR here, not a sport stars like now. If u happen to c her on the street, u wil look at her as "China Ppl" or "Singaporean"? Even when we chit chat with friend during lunch and mention a PR from China, we aso wil say "oh, u mean Peter? He is a 中国人. From China." I dun think anyone will say "Oh, u mean peter? He is Singaporean".
