Simon Davies pay £3 a week to play for a village team

Simon Davies once earned £30,000 a week - now the former Wales, Tottenham and Everton player will pay £3 a week to play for a village team

A WELSH soccer star who was paid £30,000-a-week has signed for a new club - a village team where he will PAY £3 to play in each match.

Simon Davies, 34, earned tens of thousands of pounds playing for Tottenham Hotspur, Everton and Fulham in a 15-year career in the Premier League.

But he has now been unveiled as the new signing for an amateur team in the seaside village of Solva in Pembrokeshire.

Former Wales star Davies will now have to pay £3 "subs" on every match day.

The midfielder, who started out as a junior for the club in his home village, was encouraged to join the club by his brother Chris, who is the team captain.

Davies said: "I'm looking forward to playing a few games with my brother and the friends I started playing with all those years ago."

Winger Davies notched up more than 200 appearances in the Premier League - and even scored in the UEFA Europa League.

He captained the Wales international team and won 58 caps for his country playing alongside legends such as Gary Speed and Ryan Giggs.

Davies has played at Old Trafford, Anfield and Stamford Bridge - but he was left without a club after being released by Fulham two seasons ago.

He was been snapped up by the Pembrokeshire League Division Two side and will face less glamorous opponents including Prendergast Villa and Milford Athletic.

Tracey Cole, club secretary at Solva AFC, said: "It's a big signing for the club.

"I've already told him I'm not paying him - he's going to have to pay subs like everyone else.

"He seems keen and hopefully he'll be available for a few matches."

Solva AFC kicked off their league campaign earlier this month and will be looking to extend their unbeaten run, with the help of their new signing, this Saturday.
