Singapore aims for fully cashless transport system by 2020: LTA

SINGAPORE: Singapore is aiming to have a fully cashless public transport system by 2020, and a slew of initiatives were announced on Friday (Aug 11) to make this a reality.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and TransitLink said in a joint press release that its Account-based Ticketing pilot, which has been in place since March this year, has seen participation grow steadily to more than 100,000 and "feedback has been encouraging".

So troublesome. At the top up machine still have to press here and there and flash our bank cards to make transaction. Call this smart? So trouble some to me. Want to go smart nation should use telephone banking to top up the fare card. At the comfort of our home or at anytime any place just press button tabs call can check balance and top up already. Where got time to queue at GTM, use our bank cards (increase the risk of people hacking and stealing our card information and password), and worse when system break down or kenna hacked disaster!

SINGAPORE — With the bulk of top-ups of fare cards still paid by cash, the shift to a cashless public transport system could affect groups such as senior citizens and young school-going children, said observers.

Commuters that TODAY spoke to also expressed worries, while transport analysts felt incentives could be offered to ease the transition for elderly commuters. They were responding to the announcement by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and TransitLink on Friday that transactions across the public transport system would go cashless by 2020.
