Singapore to scrap ailing S. League?

Singapore's S.League could be scrapped - report

Reuters

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Discussions have taken place about scrapping Singapore's ailing 10-team soccer league, the Straits Times reported on Wednesday.

Unhappy club chairmen met with Football Association of Singapore (FAS) officials on Monday, where heated exchanges took place over slumping attendances and the inability to find sponsors, the paper said.

The league was reduced from 12 teams this season after one withdrew because of costs and two others merged, with the paper reporting that the remaining 10 received subsidies of S$800,000 ($593,384) a year.

"Even our national coach was quoted as saying he does not go to S.League games, so we told the FAS that things need to change," an unnamed chairman told the daily.

"We have grown tired of sourcing for sponsors and wooing fans when FAS themselves have their eyes on the Lions XII and the Asean Super League."

The Lions XII are a Singapore select side that play in the Malaysian Super League, with their Malaysian counterparts Hariman Muda one of three foreign sides to compete in the S.League.

Club chairmen are unhappy that a number of Singapore's best players are ring-fenced off from them in order to play for the Lions or the Young Lions, a Singaporean under-23 side that plays in the S.League.

Singapore are also expected to home two franchises in the Southeast Asian Super League, which has been slated for next year.

Where those players will come from is a concern for club chairmen, who have seen attendances slump to less than 500 in some matches this season, the league's 20th.

Three options were discussed at Monday's meeting at the Jalan Besar Stadium, the paper said, with one involving scrapping the S.League and focussing on having four teams competing in Malaysia and the Southeast Asian Super League.

Another option was to dump the Young Lions and Lions XII, while the third was to involve a larger number of younger players in the S.League.

While fans in the wealthy city-state turn away from domestic action as the national team have slumped to their worst ever position of 162nd in the world rankings, they continue to look elsewhere, mainly England, for their football fix.

"The leagues in Thailand and Malaysia are pulling away and the standards of once footballing minnows like Guam and Cambodia are catching up with ours," another unnamed chairman said.

"If these aren't enough to scream that change is needed, I don't know what is."

Re: Singapore to scrap ailing S. League?

Oh man I don't know..... well chew on this, an average roller derby game in rural Montana draws a crowd many times that of an average S-League game. We're talking about a small town with about 3000 population. And yet, in Singapore, population 5.4 million can't even draw 100 fans to a top of the league clash in the world's most popular sport? Da fark?

Look at this:

This is during World Cup 2014. Americans packed Soldier Field (fark the Bears) in Chicago to watch a TELECAST of USA vs Belgium. And its friggin SOCCER.

The lowest average attendance for an NFL team is from Oakland Raiders, with an average of 50,444 fans. And S-League still have the gall to claim 500 fans in attendance? Just look at the stadium!! Where's the 500 fans? You're in luck if u can find 5 fans! lol.

Re: Singapore to scrap ailing S. League?

Wanna know what sort of fan base the Green Bay Packers have? Would-be Season ticket holders are placed on the waiting list. And the waiting time is 30 YEARS! So if u place your name in the Packers season ticket waiting list now, you can expect to get your season ticket package in 3 decades. Yeah, think about. So what those cheeseheads up in Wisconsin do is that the moment a baby is born, the parents would immediately place the baby's name into the waiting list, so by the time the toddler turns 30, they get Packers season tickets!

That's how fiercely proud NFL fans are. And then we have the S-League. Attendance is FREE sometimes. And no takers. WTF is going on? Hell, the people living around Jalan Besar wouldn't go down to the stadium, even if they live right next door! This is so farked up, its no longer funny.

one point is s -league has been a waste of resources since no one watches

on the other hand, a lot of players gonna be jobless esp those who never study and only know how to play football

No meaning to sustain their sports if no one watches.

So where did they get the national players before the S-League started?

can a team in MSL be sustainable in the long run ... remember we pull out of MSL due to inconsistent decisions

Re: Singapore to scrap ailing S. League?

Its been 20 years and frankly speaking, Singapore's national team really can't make it anywhere. Just look at countries like Uruguay. They're not richer than Singapore and they have a population less than that of Singapore. And look where they are now. So u can't blame on the small population. Fact is Singapore has 75% Chinese, and yet pretty much the entire national team comprise of minority races. Something needs to be done. As far as numbers go, its the only national team in the world with such pattern.

As terrible as I think Major League Soccer is, at least the American team is going places. I actually thought MLS is ailing as fark, but we still draw the crowds and winning games. So Singapore do the same.

Re: Singapore to scrap ailing S. League?

During the 1980 Winter Olympic in ice hockey, the USA team comprises of entirely college and amateur players went on to beat the mighty Soviet Union at Lake Placid. That's the equivalent of soccer players from NUS and NTU beating the likes of Argentina and Germany. So the fking asstards at FAS are giving excuses ranging from the lack of resources, poor attendance, right down to the physical size of players for their demise. Its all excuses.

Some factors raised by analysts include national service commitments, lack of youth development system , lack of job security with just a year contract and etc that caused this predicament

Can't blame the locals for not showing interest in the S League. Singapore is so hectic that no one got time lol.
