I may not speak for those die hard soccer fans but I noticed that the quality of S League is dropping a lot for the past few years. Maybe that explains why people rather watch Lions12 than S League.

Blaming NS is a pathetic excuse for the failing of Singapore soccer. Countries like South Korea, Russia, Thailand, and even Brazil has mandatory conscription. Of course, North Korea also has conscription, and they made it to World Cup in 2010.

So can Singapore blame NS for the poor standard of soccer?

south koreans can defer NS or exempt if they perform well in sports ... but our deferment is not that easy to get (only schooling obtain it). They can also choose the age they wanted to enlist...

Banned South Korean earns military exemption

Friday, August 24, 2012 MYT 12:00:02 AM
(Reuters) - The South Korean football player who inflamed a diplomatic row with Japan by waving a political placard at the London Olympics has been granted exemption from military service.

Park Jong-woo, who has yet to receive his bronze medal, was described as "courageous" by the chief of South Korea's Military Manpower Administration (MMA), local media reported on Friday.

"I think Park has met all legal requirements for the exemption," Kim Il-saeng told the parliamentary committee on national defence.

"I don't foresee any problems with his case."

South Korean men between 18 and 35 are required to complete two years of military service.

Athletes who win Olympic medals, Asian Games gold or accomplish other notable sporting achievements are exempted and only required to do four weeks of basic training.

Park held up a sign referring to a territorial dispute between South Korea and Japan while celebrating a 2-0 win over their fierce rivals in the Olympic bronze medal match.

The placard - which read "Dokdo is our territory" - triggered further controversy following a surprise visit by South Korean President Lee Myung-bak to the islands, known in Japan as Takeshima, before the game earlier this month.

Park's act, described as "impulsive" by the Korea Football Association, got him banned from the medal ceremony at Wembley, and his name was not announced over the public address system.

Kim said the Sports Ministry was "in the process of recommending" Park for the exemption, according to South Korea's Yonhap news agency.

He added: "I personally think he is a courageous and an admirable player."

Soccer's world ruling body FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings against Park.

The disputed islands, controlled by South Korea but also claimed by Japan, lie equidistant from the two countries and are believed to contain frozen natural gas deposits potentially worth billions of dollars.

I don't 100% blame NS for drop in soccer performance, players, coaches, FAS has some role to play... but it is a small factor to consider also ...

but the players also need to show more hunger in games also ...

Re: Singapore to scrap ailing S. League?

During my school days, even when I'm represent Sg in the youth tournament local and overseas, I don't play for any club. I was spotted while representing my school. After that, few clubs called me but i reject them for study cos I see no future in this sport in SG..From the management to the system, ittotal failure. A decision I never regret.

Seriously, an over haul is needed if they are seriously thinking to improve their current status.

Once i've seen a match played and there were NO ONE in the stadium.
Whats the point of wasting so much resources playing to an empty audience?
