Singapore's HDB 'Ghost Town'

HDB Ghost Town In Singapore

These blocks of flats at Neo Tiew, near Lim Chu Kang, have been abandoned for ten years, says STOMPer Subaru. He also shares with us an urban legend of the place.

The STOMPer says:

"These flats were built in 1979, and abandoned since 10 years ago.

"This place has a market, playground and 3-storey flats. All abandoned.

"They are blocks 3 to 5 on Neo Tiew Road, at the junction of Lim Chu Kang and Kranji.

"It is also near the Sungei Gedong and Lim Chu Kang army camps.

"There is a legend that the king of the banana trees was planted behind the flats.

"One person wanted to strike a fortune in lottery, so he prayed at the tree.

"He threatened the king by putting seven pins into the tree.

"After he became rich, he ran off and bought a condo, but forgot to remove the pins.

"Thus the king of the banana trees died, and the spirit has been seeking revenge since.

"After this happened, the block of flats became abandoned.

"This place is still used for army training and apparently, it is also scheduled for HDB redevelopment in the future."

http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/st...of_banana.html

More photos in the link. Please don't shift this to Supernatural section. A ghost town doesn't necessarily mean got ghost. It means the town has been abandoned and there are no inhabitants, despite the presence of buildings, market and playground. I know about this ghost town many years ago, but havent got the guts to visit it.There must be a reason why HDB left it there to rot. Its creepy but fascinating. If I'm not wrong, the market is still there, along with the HDB blocks and a playground. But there are nobody living in that estate!

Re: Singapore's HDB 'Ghost Town'

the last time i was there 2 years ago,for FIBUA training, very interesting.
first time was in 2003, passed by the playground, started to imagine if i were to stay alone facing the playground from the kitchen.

felt weird because of the surrounding. as if like you are watching horror movies from the
80s, then suddenly a psycho killer appeared out of nowhere!

The picture simply made it too scary.
Go there and see it with your own eyes. It is not scary at all

Can visit using Google Streetview actually. Even if got people to accompany me, I'm still too scared to go anywhere near that place, even in broad daylight.

Re: Singapore's HDB 'Ghost Town'

I'm still curious why HDB left the buildings there to rot. Its so old school, that their floor numbers are spray painted on. I can't even imagine how the former inhabitants get out of this town. Are there bus services? Surely there are no MRT or cabs. Do they all own cars? That part of Lim Chu Kang is pure wilderness.

Re: Singapore's HDB 'Ghost Town'

Perhaps the reason for HDB to let it "rot" there is bcos SAF is using it to train its soliders.

Maybe HDB can consider converting it into a dorm for FTs

Re: Singapore's HDB 'Ghost Town'

I find this STOMP article LAME. It is quite obvious that this STOMPer does not even know SAF is using the place for urban warfare training. Why make such a comment abt HDB leaving this place to rot?

Re: Singapore's HDB 'Ghost Town'

taken from another forum;

"My uncle and cousins was one of those Lim Chu Kang pig-farming household "en bloc" by the government back in 1984. I was staying at another pig farming community with my family at Seletar then.

The government offered them a small sum of money as compensation and given subsidised flats in the upcoming new towns such as Yishun, Ang Mo Kio and Hougang. There were also two "community" estate at Neo Tiew and Seletar West Farmway, around 4 blocks of low rise flats, which gave the farmers a choice to live close to where their farms were.

The take up rates were quite good and were the ex-farmers pride and joy. But as the years went by, these two estate were not developed further and was isolated from the bigger new towns. Eventually, they were "en bloc"-ed again, forcing the farmers to move yet another time within a sort period of 10 plus years."

Re: Singapore's HDB 'Ghost Town'

At least the SAF uses it wisely for urban warfare. So it's not really left there to rot after all.
