SingTel to shut down Magix service

PARTY on, broadband. Happy retirement, Magix.

SingTel is ending its older Internet connection service, Magix, at the end of this month - so as to get its customers to use broadband.

But one woman is not happy. Madam GC Teo does not want a faster Internet connection. Or a cheaper one.

The reason: She does not like change.

And she said she was not alerted by the telco earlier, until she found out about it herself.

It upset the 55-year-old businesswoman so much that she called The New Paper's Hotline to register her frustration.

She found out about the impending Magix wind-up when she called SingTel's hotline regarding her bill on 5Mar. She was told that all customers must move to broadband service by the end of March. But they will pay less.

The telco's latest broadband deal under SingNet is $29.95 a month for unlimited usage at a speed of 512kbps (kilobytes per second). Magix users pay $63 or $126 a month depending on usage.

And while Magix has connection speeds of up to 512Kbps, broadband has much faster speeds of up to 10Mbps (megabytes per second).

Madam Teo said: 'I've been using Magix since 1999 and I'm used to it. Being from the older generation, I'm not sure how broadband works.

'When you're used to something, it's hard to change.'

When contacted, Mr Peter Heng, director of corporate communications at SingTel, confirmed that the plan is to terminate its Magix service at the end of the month.

However, he said SingTel will not discontinue the service 'unilaterally' until all existing customers have moved to its broadband services.

'For customers who insist on using Magix, we'll review their situations on a case-by-case basis to address their concerns,' he said.

Re: SingTel to shut down Magix service

It's strange... Cuz Magix and Broadband both use the ADSL technology for transmitting over telephone lines, so I don't quite see a difference between Magix and Singnet Broadband...

It's more of the resistance to change den whether technologically which is better.

For the older generation, as long as their internet connection is working, they dun care how it works.

I used to be using magix many years ago.

Re: SingTel to shut down Magix service

that's quite lame...

to register concerns abt a change when the change is good and beneficial, just cos it causes u some psychological and irrational unease. it's a waste of newspaper space.

it's like calling up a newspaper telling them that ur neighbour is moving away and u don't like it cos u don't like change...

Didn't you know our local papers nowadays got nothing to report on?

Freedom of speech is just a phrase with no action involved.

oh easy for you to say?You are not the person involved....

It does not take a genius to figure out that people are not rational 100% so no one is able to see the truth in everything. That is why not knowing the truth, she complained....
