So does anyone here make their own dolls?

Or do you all buy off the shelf (or web shop)?

When I was in Japan last year I was amazed by the scratch built BJDs at an exhibition. The artists built 1/3 scale dolls with all kinds of custom configurations; mermaid tails, emanciated looks, etc, and also sewed all the clothes themselves, due to the unusual scale.

Is anyone into this sort of thing? I got hold of the Yoshida Style book and want to try it out, but in Singapore all we can find is paper clay. The terracotta type at Art Friend is way too course, so it looks like I'll have to get la doll stone clay from Hobbylink Japan.

Anyway here's the basic framework I've come up with so so far. Creepy?

It's just sawdust and paper clay. The stone clay will be overlaid on top for the fine details.

Re: So does anyone here make their own dolls?

so far.... not yet.... in sg no one have done it...

before building one.. u need a bit of research of course.... due to the "how poserable is the thing"
in the western side n Japan .... i seen b4 the process of building it... under prob will be the face... face n details will be hard to make... o-o well IMO

Re: So does anyone here make their own dolls?

Yes, the focal point is the face, so the body can be secondary in terms of details. Wrong proportions for the face will spoil everything.

Anyway it'll be done with stone clay, since Yoshida Style said it's strong enough. I've casted many parts in resin years ago so there's always that option if it's not.

Anyway, HLJ is out of stock now for stone clay, so it's a 1-month wait before anything progresses.

Normally, on most BJDs, do they follow the standard 1/2 subdivision rule for faces (ie eyes are at the midpoint of scalp to chin, nose is halfway between eyes and chin, mouth is halfway between nose and chin, etc), or are they more stylized with other kinds of proportions? I noticed that most of the volks series have mouths closer to the nose.

Re: So does anyone here make their own dolls?

Those are actually the standard guidelines most people use when drawing faces, so I applied them here.

Anyway here're more photos.

Re: So does anyone here make their own dolls?

for proportion... best if u can study the human face.. like the eyes are one eyes apart.... lol
n oso do look at those blank head's reference.. to look at more... details.. like the ears.... the two lins under the nose? double eye lid... curvy lips... lip's thickness.... dun forget abt the body too.. like... arms = 2 1/2 heads *cant remember.... u have to find out it urself*

n not onli those....dont make ur... hallow inside so small... coz.. it might chipped off.. if.. u string it to tight

Re: So does anyone here make their own dolls?

It's been a while, and there's been no progress on this, because la doll clay has been out of stock at HLJ for months already. I broke down and ordered New Fando instead from rainbow ten, and it should be arriving next week.

So far all I have is the inner core, made with the cheap daiso paper clay. This gets all fuzzy when its sanded, so there's no way it can be the final layer.

Hands and feet will have to wait.. they're the most intricate parts so they'll get done last.

It's always good to test fit the components as you're going along. It'd be a real waste if, after sculpting the face of the century, you find that it's too big for the hair piece, or the eyes are bigger than the eye sockets.

This one is a little too big, but since it's in the early stage I can chip off bits from the rear of the head to make the hair fit nicely.
