Burning of oil fuel causes pollution and damages the O-Zone Layer of Planet Earth.
How I wish there are Solar Powered Cars that operate by electrical energy accumulated from the sunlight.
So we have a much more cleaner environment.

Those cars can be realized if only they improved the current battery technology. Current battery technology is too back-dated.

I wonder whether solar energy can be stored in Lithium-Ion batteries...

The current battery do not last long. 9 hours battery life for standard low usage. But for a car, the demand for energy is high.
Therefore, there is a need to improve the current battery technology. A new source would be required.

actually i do see this becoming a reality in the not so distant future. Solar power is one of the leading replaceable fuels that is heavily researched upon right now. If there is going to be any fuel replacement for cars, it will be solar

That which will be realized in 10 years time?
Singapore is kind of slow when it comes to stuffs like this.

There is too much red tapes in the civil service for them to implement such plans.

To be able to power the car through the night where solar energy won't be readily available, there is a need to implement more advanced technology that allows the batteries to last much longer than current levels.

But then, it would take a very long time to charge a car. If i'm not wrong, i think it takes up to 1.5days to charge a car fully. Current technologies does not allow us to trap the energy from the sun effectively, think the maximum is less than 20%. If we can improve it by even 1%, the energy harnessed from the sun would increase. In fact, the energy from the sun each day is enough to power 200 Singapore(s) on a daily basis.

Disregarding an average car, which requires 100+kW on average. Using solar cells alone isn't enough to power an average home in sg.
Furthermore the surface area of a car is very limited, and the sun-direction is always changing, which means an even further drop in efficiency.
current pure solar powered cars are impractical for everyday use. Despite their large surface areas, they still need to have very low drag coeffs and have to be very light weight.
Solar cells are becoming more and more efficient, but I believe there will be a limit, just like wind power. It can be used to offset the current energy demands, but it will unlikely totally replace it unless the area is very feasible (need a very large land area to harvest these).

it will be great.only 3% of energy from burning fuel for electricity is converted into useful work. That is really very bad.
