Total SGC$: 516.38 | Some help on computer upgrades Hey guys, I'm currently considering upgrading my slightly more-than-1-year-old desktop. My first concern is that I have a freaking 5 year warranty, there's a sticker preventing my from opening the CPU case, so I'm wondering if my warranty would void if I were to upgrade my desktop, or will the warranty still be valid even if I were to just open up the casing to clean up the inside.
My PC's current specs is:
HP Pavilion
Win Vista Home Premium
Intel Core 2 CPU 6400 @ 2.13GHz
2X 512 MB DDR2-SDRAM (PC2-4200 / PC2-4300 / 533 MHz)
NVIDIA GeForce 7500 LE
I'm thinking of upgrading my graphics card into 9600 and adding another 1 GB of RAM. But there's something about dual-channel thingy, so I'm wondering if its alright to simply add a single stick of 1GB DDR2-SDRAM RAM, or do I need to buy another two 512GM RAM?
Another thing is that the 9600 GPU, what happens if its too big to fit into its slot? As in the spaces around it. Would it be possible to calculate and tell if my PSU would supply enough power if I were to install the 9600 card since I do not know how much power each of my computer component uses. Are there any major bottleneck for the 9600 card with my current specs?
Sorry if some of the questions are too stupid since I'm not very good with computers. Thanks in advance for any advise.

Sorry if some of the questions are too stupid since I'm not very good with computers. Thanks in advance for any advise. | For Geforce 9600 GT GPU, it should be able to fit into the slot, as it will occupy single slot (slim card profile). See the attached picture.
Dual-channel thing, if u want, add in 2 x 1 GB stick will be good or better still, 2 x 2 GB stick. Just remove the 2 x 512 MB ones as adding another pair of those is not very cost-effective.
Take note that Generic DDR2 Ram prices have dropped to very low level for now.
For the power of each component, can check out over the Net, as there are different power usage, its difficult to explain here.
For bottleneck issues with Geforce 9600GT, think it should be ok ba. Dun think will have a major issue with E6400 Core 2 Duo CPU.
That's all i can help for now...

E6400?? sure is one old chip man, but no worries, shldnt be any problem, till maybe when u start playing Crysis, when the chip default speed isnt providing enuff juice

Dun think E6400 can handle Crysis well, but with 9600 GT should be better le...

Anyway, is it possible to leave my current 2X 512 MB RAM alone and simply add another 1GB RAM? Because I don't feel like dumping away those 2 sticks of RAM. I'm asking about the dual channel thing is because my mobo supports it and HP uses 2X 512 MB stick instead of 1X 1GB is to take advantage of dual channel. So my concern is if I have to pair up the RAMs.
I was hoping to play games like Crysis, Assasin's Creed, NFS: Prostreet on high, if not, very high. Would it be possible with the upgraded 9600 and 2GB RAM?

If want take advantage of dual channel, use another 2 x 512 MB ram ba, if not just remove them and get 2 x 1 GB or 1 x 2 GB ..
Take note if use 1 x 2 GB, there's no dual channel applied..
So decide carefully for the RAMs ba, Quote:

please check with HP on warranty issues, if not suddenly u might discover all your parts have void warranty.
Eg. Acer, even if you open up they will still cover those original parts by them. goenitz33 added 0 Minutes and 44 Seconds later...
As for Dual Channel issues, forget abt it.
performance gain in real time is less then 2% and in benchmarks less then 5%.
not much of a difference IMO.

I have very limited cash on hand so I can't spend much, so a 9600GT and 1 stick of RAM would cost about like $300~$400? I'll leave the processor alone since its not that bad.
Maybe I'll try calling HP later about upgrading my com. I think that HP warranty is only 1 year or so, the remaining years are Courts Extended Warranty, gona comfirm that later.

HP warranty normally is 1 year standard...
Other warranty should be by retailer instead... 2 x 2 GB sticks now around $ 110 market price... 9600 GT price is very low le... Palit ones are cheapest i think...
The cost should be roughly $210 ~ $300 range...
End upgrade :
minimum -> 2 GB + 9600 GT
maxmum -> 4 GB *Dual-channel* + 9600 GT Quote:

I also use DIY computers, same reason as you, jonwhoosh... Limitations & Issues... >.<

Then outfit with 4 GB Ram, total around $270 ~ $340 range, as specified by Cesario.
Do take note that the mainboard may accept Rams with certain frequencies, like your board may support up to DDR2-667Mhz ones, if nt wrong.
Thx to Cesario for the updated prices,

unless your board got special requirements.
Branded PCs might have special requirements sometimes.
certain 3rd party parts might not work with it.
