Total SGC$: 751.38 | S'pore athletes celebrate 2006 success, aim for Olympic medal
SINGAPORE: The stellar performance of local athletes last year has bolstered confidence that Singapore can win a medal at the next Olympic Games.
This is the assessment of the President of the Singapore National Olympics Council, Mr Teo Chee Hean.
"To win an Olympic medal, we need more of the breakthroughs we saw in 2006. This is a higher, much more difficult level than we've achieved.
"We need to shake off our doubts and believe we can do it. Our achievements across the board in 2006 are reason enough to believe it is possible, and Project 0812 is our belief put into action," says Mr Teo.
He was speaking at the Singapore Sports Awards ceremony on Thursday evening.
He said 2006 was 'a breakthrough year'.
Singapore brought home five gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in March.
And at the Asian Games in Doha, Singapore won eight gold medals.
Mr Teo said Singapore athletes outperformed all expectations and did the country proud.
So it is time to celebrate a year of accomplishments.
Joining the sports fraternity were President SR Nathan and Mrs Nathan.
They and 500 Team Singapore athletes and guests witnessed National Bowler Remy Ong being crowned Sportsman of the Year.
Teenage swimming star Tao Li clinched Sportswoman of the Year.
"I'm very proud and I'm very honoured to receive it and this shows my hard work last year has won approval from the public and for myself. I'm preparing for the SEA Games now and then I think more importantly is the next Olympics Games," says Tao Li.
The Team of the Year award went to the women's table tennis paddlers.
Zhang Yong Qiang from Sailing won Coach of the Year title.
Also from sailing is Sportsboy Colin Cheng, while shooter Vanessa Yong won the Sportsgirl award. - CNA

Hahaha! Don't make me laugh!
FAS had actually wanted SG to qualify for World Cup finals in 2010 when S-League was founded hence Goal 2010. Look where are we now? Not even the Kingpins of S E Asia, Thailand, had qualifed for WC before.
IMHO, the SG of the late 70's with Quah Kim Song, Edmund Wee, Rajagopal, Fandi, Pathmanatan, etc. was the best ever assembled team. That team nearly qualfied for the 1980's Olympic. In the final qualifying round, we lost to Iran. It was the closest SG Soccer had ever nearly make it.
In our history, we had only 1 S'porean who had won a medal, a bronze, in weightlifting back in the 30's. What make them so cocky now that they can win a medal? Not even our best like Ang Peng Siong or Joycelin had ever come close. These 2 swimmers constantly beat the craps out of our neighbours but they are still not good enough to win a medal in Commonweath games let alone in the olympics.

Tao Li has a chance as her swim speed it getting faster, in fact, she is trying to break her own record.
Ohwells. Some info on Singapore Sports for those who don't know.

Commonwealth Games, Melbourne 2006 - 5 Gold Medals

- 7 Bronze Medals
Doha Asian Games 2006 - 8 Gold Medals

the reason is simply because soccer and swimming are not very suited to our asian physique.. as simple as that... as such, for those two sports, u realise that it is diff to break the western dominance.. only few asian countries hve done so (japan for instance)
as such, if wanna win a medal at the olympic, choose a sport that is suited for us, eg badminton, table tennis and the chances of winning will be higher
