SINGAPORE : Singapore won a total of 37 medals at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens, Greece - five more than the previous Games in 2007.

In all, the 46 athletes raked in 12 gold, 13 silver and 12 bronze medals.

The team received a warm welcome when they returned home on Thursday morning.

Minister of State for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Halimah Yacob, was also present to receive them.

The Special Olympics are for adults and children with intellectual disabilities.

And this year, Singapore attained gold in categories like aquatics, athletics and bowling.

Singapore also took part in the half-marathon for the first time - winning gold and silver. Tan Too Sheng won the gold medal while Huang Kia Song won the silver.

Meanwhile, the seven-a-side football team secured gold after beating Chile 3-2 in a penalty shootout.

Madam Halimah said: "I am really really proud of our team, they did really well, and I think it is not just a question of the medals. I was told that 15 of our athletes actually bested their last performances, they did better than their own performances, own timing. But what I think comes across so well, is the spirit, the passion and commitment that one cannot duplicate anywhere."

Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Chan Chun Sing, has also extended his congratulations to the team. He said: "Congratulations to all our Special Olympic Singapore athletes for doing Singapore proud, and in the process, exceeding the performance from the last Games. Special credit goes to their family members, coaches and supporters for making all these possible. You are all winners in every way."
