I dont find it nice to do so, even you got in earlier, there might be no seats. | Interesting example imho, even from here we can see that we tend not to do something mainly because it doesn't benefit us, rather than because it's not a nice thing to do in itself...
Much to learn, myself included ;-)

Take a look at Japan's subway systems and you would then really know what is meant by the bolded part. Students compete both academically and in the sporting arena, "every one of them more fiercely competitive than the other", she said.
I choose to think that we should blame this on the paper chase culture in Singapore, rather than on one's upbringing. Afterall, it's only human nature to strive for the best, and out there, it's survival of the strongest.

Phu Chua Kang still haven't change us haha! Not saying that he should be the one...
I take MRT everyday i do see some people giving up their seats okay! I sometimes i sit at priority seat if its not crowded.
But one thing will never change! People will never allow alighting passengers to get off before squeezing their way into the carriage!
And i totally agree about the upbringing thingy. Without my mother i would still be called a 'typical singaporean'.

Whip out the fines and start fining people for aberrant behavior. The only way to make naughty Singaporeans behave is to hit their wallet

Well.. to a certain extent its because of the culture of being "punished" for something that you do... so when there is no "punishment" in place, then all hell just breaks lose lor... Just see SG tourists' behaviour in other countries.

Ask her to use other words please, WE ARE KIASU and I freaking hell admit that. Poor upbringing huh? We like the most peaceful country that can be ever found.
JUST look at china, they can sell you thumbdrives with only the head, or making fake eggs to scam people. MIDDLE east, children as young as four carrying AK-47. IN THE STATES, racial discrimination prevails. THEN WTH are them?

Guys. THIS IS SINGAPORE.
everythings about qualifications,certs,money,and results.
the process is no longer needed.
we cant change this. because of our government, everything becomes so competitive.
childrens at the age of 7, they are taught to score well. stress to make them go to top schools.
parents teach them to only keep things to themselves, being selfish.
Students, even with bad manners, principals, discipline masters, cant lay a finger on them.
because of laws, keeping up with the world.
even if possible, they wont be bothered?
why?
because our current living society is moving so fast and everythings about being "black and white"
tiny stuffs, this cannot, that cannot. Everyone just cannot tahan stuff.
whats so hard about letting go and go easy.
little things, want fight, want pride, demand respect. settle in court
and because of this everyone learns to "siam" stuffs.
Heard before this line?
" Can Siam then Siam. Cannot Siam then Push. Cannot Push then GG."
happens so often, froms schools to office to government servants.
and we need to be realistic, because of our society. everything's about appearance, money and status.
Man A having a basic salary of 10k, chooses not to drives a luxury car, instead a motocycle.
compared to Man B having a 3k a month, buys cars. wears branded stuff.
When seen together, others would look down on Man A. just because of hes appearance.
That is why. We put aside the process.
Upbringing is not part of status, appearance, certs, and money.
Hence, the poor upbringing.
Yes. We ARE educated. But never mannered.
just my Two Cents.
and P.S, im not against the Government of anything.
They are really doing a great job.
They cant please everyone right?
Cheers

That's definitely the case. Some people lack moral teachings, it's something beyond what school can teach. Parents play an important role, it's like a "Monkey sees, monkey do" thing, children tend to follow their parents.

i agree. teachers are there, only to educate and guide them.
its really up to parents to teach them life and moral values.
like the chinese saying.
养不教
父之过
教不严
师之惰
and yet the government requires every student to take up the CME ( Civis and Moral Education ) lessons.
really think its an utter waste of resources.
every week somemore.
my point is, at the end of the day. its parents who have to bear the consequences.
seeing their children misled, turn bad. its really onto them isnt it?

omg. did someone piss her off and therefore she wrote in her blog to relieve her gas?
seriously. if they were younger like kids, the kiasu came from the competition we always get in our schools now. if they are not competitive, then they are find something else negative to comment, Sg kids too soft and in-competitive compared to FTs.
the poor upbringing is totally plain stupid. looks like she forgot to think with her brain.
as again, the media and its people have godly skills of generalization.

I don't quite understand this tread. Because what I have been encountered was actually different scenario from that commented here... Perhaps TS should add a "SOME" infront of the Subject.
But excuse me please, how many Singaporeans here concur to this? I'm not a xenophobia anyway.
