S'pore's expressways bogged by 100 mishaps a day: report

Figure is up 40 per cent from three years ago, LTA said.

TRAFFIC congestion on expressways are a daily occurrence for Singapore's road commuters and the situation appears to have not gotten better in recent years.

There are no fewer than 100 mishaps daily - ranging from accidents to vehicle break-downs - which disrupt traffic on the country's high-speed arteries, The Straits Times (ST) reported on Wednesday.

This figure is up 40 per cent from three years ago, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said in the report.

Three aspects can account for this rise, LTA said, namely a wider coverage by its EMAS expressway monitoring system, more vehicles on the road, and more expressways.

Sources interviewed by The Straits Times pointed to a few contributing factors, including poor driving attitudes, too many entrances and exits for expressways, and more newcomers who are unfamiliar with the road system.
