Start-up guide launched to help budding entrepreneurs
By Yvonne Cheong, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 26 July 2007 1628 hrs

SINGAPORE: A new business guide was launched on Thursday to give start-ups a leg up in setting up and running a business in Singapore.

The guide contains both regulatory and business information - from tax issues and financing options, to drafting business plans and choosing business structures.

It was launched by Minister of State for Finance and Transport Lim Hwee Hua at the inaugural Start-up Conference.

She said more than 45,500 new enterprises were set up in Singapore last year.

Out of these, about 4,000 were high tech firms - nearly matching the figure during the dot.com boom in 2000.

She pointed to these as signs that the entrepreneurial spirit was very much alive and kicking.

"The government is committed to making the business environment in Singapore more pro-enterprise. We do this by removing regulatory barriers and red tape as far as possible.

"We will not be able to abolish rules entirely, but we will try to keep this to the minimum, while ensuring that they go about facilitating businesses and creating a trusted business environment," said Ms Lim.

Per Dahlen, Managing Director, AUM Business Creations, said, "I'm so overwhelmed by all the support I find here, having started up companies in other countries, this is second to none, it's incredible the support that I get from the Singapore government…I will definitely use this book in the future on a day to day basis."

The startup guide will be on sale by the end of the month. - CNA/yy
