Stomper's nightmare experience after shopping in JB: Accident, car chase and slapped with fine

Stomper's nightmare experience after shopping in JB: Accident, car chase and slapped with fine of RM300

The photo on the left shows the deep dent and scratches on the Malaysia-registered black Mercedes, while the photo on the right shows one of the men who tried to intimidate the Stomper

It was a day of shopping with his family at Johor Bahru's AEON shopping centre, but a Stomper's journey back to Singapore was nothing short of unforgettable.

The Stomper said it all started when he was reversing his Hyundai Getz out of the open-air carpark space at the mall located in Bukit Indah on Sunday (Nov 9) at about 8.30pm.

The back bumper of his car then grazed the side of a black Mercedes that was suddenly driven into him.

He shared his story:

"While reversing slowly after checking my rear mirrors, blind spots and signalling my intention to do so, a black Mercedes suddenly rushed in and hit the rear of my vehicle.

"Subsequently, the vehicle moved to the front and stopped right in front of us.

"All of us alighted our vehicles to inspect the damage.

"My car just sustained slight scratches at the back bumper and there were no dents visible.

"But to my astonishment, the old black Mercedes had multiple deep dents and scratches on his front bumper and even some on its solid metal body that stretched to the back of the car.

"It seemed rather fishy as the damage to the two vehicles did not seem to match at all.

"The driver of the black Mercedes was a young man, aged 21, and he tried to distract us by telling us that another Singapore-registered vehicle had zoomed to the front of his vehicle and in order to avoid a collision, he had swerved the Mercedes towards our car.

"Now, there were 3 passengers in the car -- the 21-year-old guy, an older man (whom he claimed was his brother) and another 8-year-old boy.

"They pestered us to follow them to them police station to file a report and we eventually agreed but told them we needed to head to the petrol station first as my car was running low on fuel.

"We finally left the AEON carpark slightly after 9pm but at the gantry, we had trouble passing through as our parking ticket had expired."

The Stomper said at this point, three 'friendly strangers' approached his car and helped him pass through. He didn't think anything of it then until he noticed them tailing him much later.

He continued:

"These three strangers who were in two cars (a white car and a red Kancil)eventually removed gantry barrier and one of them reminded me to wait for the BMW behind me.

"I corrected him and told him that it was a Mercedes and I was wondering how this stranger knew of this accident between me and the Mercedes car driver.

"I brushed it off at that time and didn't think much of it.

"We headed to the petrol station as planned and I signalled to follow the Mercedes.

"He led us away from Bukit Indah and into the highway towards Gelang Patah. I signalled for him to stop at the road shoulder as I know a nearby police station in Bukit Indah.

"But to my amazement, the Mercedes -- and another two cars -- stopped at the road shoulder.

"One was the white car whose driver had helped us back at AEON shopping centre.

"In total, at least four people got out of the three vehicles (they looked like gangsters). I explained to them that we should go to the nearest police station at Bukit Indah but they rejected my offer.

"Fearing for my family’s safety (I was with my wife, stepfather and mother, I went straight back into my car and drove off.

“I drove towards Second Link."

The three vehicles then chased the Stomper all the way to Second Link. At one point in time, they managed to corner him at a road shoulder. With the men looking aggressive, he had no choice but to reverse his car against the oncoming traffic while sounded his horn.

Eventually, he reversed his way out of the tight spot and made his way again towards Second Link.

The Stomper said: "One of the men even stood in the middle of the highway screaming and spreading his hands to stop me from passing through."

The nightmare continued all the way to Malaysian customs. There was a jam heading back to Singapore and at one of the toll booths, one of the men came down and started banging violently on the window.

"My wife was on the phone with the Malaysian police at the time. My father then confronted the man and pushed him away from the window," the Stomper recalled.

"A confrontation ensued and pretty soon, everyone was outside their vehicles.

"Eventually, we came to the agreement that the young Mercedes driver will sit in the back of my car and all of us will head towards the customs.

"Upon reaching the customs, the police officer in charge escorted us to the Gelang Patah police station to make the official traffic police report.

"We reached the Gelang Patah police station just after 11pm.

"The traffic officer told us that they had shut down their system and we would have to wait till after 12am to make the report.

"Midnight came and we lodged the reports but after that, police officers escorted me to another private room and I was given a summon of RM300!

"The rationale? He claimed I reversed into the Mercedes and caused the accident!

"I have a voice recording of the Mercedes driver saying he swerved towards my vehicle to avoid a collision with another car in front of him.

"These details were not put into the report and in the end, the blame was pinned on me.

"To top it off, the serious damage to the Mercedes did not tally with my small scratch.

"It was kind of obvious that the Mercedes was trying to get free repairs from a previous serious accident and perhaps, purposedly rammed my car to pin the blame on me.

"We were escorted to Tuas at about 1.10am. We eventually reached home after 2am.

"The next day, we filed a police report in Singapore but the police officer told us that our report is of no use to the investigation as it happened in Malaysia.

"So we will be heading to Malaysia again soon to make another police report there at a different station.

"I just want to share my story so that other people will not fall into the same trap."

Alamak, it's always dangerous in JB. That's why I don't even want to go there to shop.

Not for me, even though I lived in Woodlands.
