Taoist devotees carry 100kg sedan chair

Four devotees are assigned to carry the heavy sedan chair that is about 80 years old.

SINGAPORE - Ever since he was 14, Mr Alvin Xie has made it his duty to join a group that faithfully carries a 100kg sedan chair for 2km as part of a religious procession.

Never mind that during this annual event, which is part of the Taoist Kew Ong Yah (nine deities) celebration, Mr Xie, 21, has suffered injuries like sprains and fractures.

"I do it for the friendship, the fun, and of course, for Kew Ong Yah," said Mr Xie, a banquet captain.

On Oct 13, about 1,000 Taoist devotees, mostly from Chong Pang estate, gathered along Yishun Ring Road for the first day of the 11-day celebration.

It is organised by the Kew Ong Ya-Hong Shan See Temple and supported by the Chong Pang Citizens' Consultative Committee. It will end tomorrow.

At about 8pm that night, golden cymbals clashed and drumbeats sounded across the neighbourhood as dragon dancers, clad in vibrant colours, leapt energetically.

"The mood was fantastic - I can't even express it in words," said Mr Eric Goh, 55, chief planner of this year's Kew Ong Yah celebration.

Sedan chair

Before this, guest-of-honour, Law and Foreign Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam kicked-off the procession at Sembawang Park by placing a joss stick urn in the 100kg sedan chair, which is made of wood imported from China.

This symbolised that the devotees were inviting the deity, Kew Ong Yah, to enter the sedan chair. A group of four devotees then carried the 100kg sedan chair as they walked for about 500m from the park to a lorry, which ferried the group to Yishun Ring Road.

This was where 1,000 other devotees were waiting to welcome Kew Ong Yah.

The procession then continued for about 1.5km to the temple, also in Yishun.

Two other red sedan chairs, each also weighing 100kg, accompanied the procession.

About 30 male devotees followed the three groups of four on standby. And every five minutes, the men carrying the sedan chairs would stop for other devotees to take over.

Besides taking turns to carry the sedan chairs throughout the procession, devotees wear white to symbolise their desire to be clean, sincere, and to symbolise purity , said Mr Goh.

He was one of the devotees who carried the main sedan chair. He has taken part in the ritual for more than 40 years.

Mr Goh also starts on a vegetarian diet about five days before the event and continues with the diet during the 11-day celebrations.

Mr Xie, who has just completed his national service, is the leader of the troupe carrying the main sedan chair this year.

Once, he sprained his right ankle while carrying one of the sedan chairs. Last year, a chair fell on his right foot, injuring his big toe.

"But we still continue, despite the pain," he said.

"It gives me a special feeling when I carry the sedan chair."
