Tashichoden's Diary (打死错灯日记)

Everyday, or noon or night, will have some thoughts.
to share here.
(just my own opinion, not a guide for practice)

================================================== ======================

This world is a half one.
The object...people...food...view...in front of our eyes,
mostly sell by themselves.
Beautiful, chio, yummy, grand...
tempted us.
make us feel good or wanna feel good, by getting them
into our hand our arms our mouth our heart.
into our life.

But we dun know,
all these things only sell half of themself.
another half ... was hidden.

In samsara, every action is a ticket.
you can chose to buy it or ignore.
but most people book the wrong ticket.
because they are tempted by the 1st half of the products/activities.
why?
because of the poster...
the feeling, the people, the food, the view, the object
all are poster only...
yet tempting enough to blind us.

most of us are blind, to see the next half of it.
That is - this ticket will lead us to create negative karma, in mind + body + speech.
So the ending of the show -- is always end up in Hell.

We are born into the 1st half of this world.
the education, environment and people around us, or media,
they taught us to be lustful, greedy and hate.
We think that this is right, for such a long time.

unless we come in touch with Buddha teaching,
which is the 2nd half.

Now I must dedicate my life to this 2nd half.

Just humble thoughts, thanks for sharing.

Cheers!

================================================== ====================

*2nd half here have multiple meaning.

Re: Tashichoden's Diary (打死错灯日记)

Practice of Buddha Teachings, can be very very simple.
It can be simplify as:
Add a little bit more,
and
Cut a little bit on.

Everyday, add a little bit more of compassion.
add a little bit more of endurance.
add a little bit more of patience.
add a little bit more of respect for human, for beings.

Everyday, cut a little bit on of lust for opposite sex
cut a little bit on greed for hamburger, chicken wing, beef, pork, charsiew, pizza, egg.
cut a little bit on hatred for the people or thing we dislike.
cut a little bit on attachement to TV, internet entertaintment, non-Dharma movies, ipad, handphone texting...

It is about addition and subtraction.
Day by day, add on to our practice.
Day by day, cut on our negative karmic force.

This is how we do our homework.

Cheers.

Re: Tashichoden's Diary (打死错灯日记)

There is always a reason why we will get in touch with something.

Here, the subject is Dharma.

Sometimes, you may just come to watch a Dharma lesson on internet or from book.
Some lesson - maybe you had already learned that before.

We easily have this thought -"Aww!, I knew this teaching for years already, I understand the essence already. I dun need to listen this anymore".

Actually, there is a reason of why we will get in touch with the Dharma that we had already learned before. To me, I always believe, because Buddha know that I have yet to fully understand this Dharma, and not yet fully or efficiently apply it in daily life/practice. So Buddha rearrange or create the chance for me to watch the lesson again, from any form of media, be it TV or internet or class.

So, I will need to abandon the thought of "I already learn this before many times, I already understand it, I dun need this anymore".

And, develop 100% respect for this Dharma, never think of it as "wahlau so simple and basic, - nothing to learn...".

My experience is, keep refreshing again and again, I really benefit more, and understand deeper and can really put it into practice with more flexibility.

In short, Dharma is like an old man, keep appear and nag to me, until I really understand him, and leave him with no worries, then he will disappear.
Then new old man appear again, teaching me new lesson, and it repeats.

So, I hope, we do not ignore or overlook or take it easy, when come to Dharma,
Sometimes, a word or a sentence, can take us to a level which we may not expect at all...

Cheers!

why dont u just practice other religion since u define Buddhism so simple ?
is life and death explainable in words ?
Can we just sit down and become Buddha ?
What kind of practice u are practising to conclude Buddhism is simple ?

Hi Dharma friend,

Amituofo.

Thank you for your views.

Simple, does not = easy/effortless
Simple, yet with very very incredible rich content.
Simple, yet is such a long journey with so many stage to pass.

Sometimes, something is so simple, that we cannot understand it.
Because we confuse ourselves too much with worldly dharmas.

Simple, is beyond words that I can explain here.

As mentioned in 1st post -- I am just sharing my opinion. no thought to conclude Buddhism anyway.

In short, I just share my thoughts, pardon me for not replying further.
Everyone have the right to think otherwise of my words,
but that may not be the right meaning or message that I want to convey.
At least, from your question, I can tell, yours is not mine.

But your question inspire me very much. Thank you so much.

Afterall, I respect all, cheers!

Re: Tashichoden's Diary (打死错灯日记)

Prostration to Buddha, actually start when I step out from chanting room.

To see everyone on the street, in the company, in the MRT, in the hawker centre...
to see them as Future Buddha...is something I am still learning.

Not to speak harsh, not to use words that will or may hurt people.
have a tender heart and attitude...is something I am still learning.

Not to return with hatred to the people that scold me, that misunderstand me, or even want to hurt me...is something I am still learning.

Prostration to Buddha,
does not mean = I just grasp my two palms and bow, kneel down and pray, infront of the Buddha Statue.

Prostration to Buddha,
does not measure in how many times I prostrate.
10 times, or 108 times, or more.

Prostration to Buddha must not stop, it should be 24/7, just like our breathing.

this is what keep me busy.

Re: Tashichoden's Diary (打死错灯日记)

H.H Karmapa's teaching is one of the practice I follow.

One of his words that really plant into my heart is:
Wherever you go, MUST NOT Forget the suffering of sentient beings.

This flash me back to this thought -- Practice is simple,
the word "simple" here = focus.
Focus on subdue myself.
勤修戒定慧 。止息贪嗔痴。
Of course, doing this is never easy. Is a step-by-step path.

In my daily practice,
memorising Buddha's or Masters' words is one of the homework.
I focus to memorise one specific Dharma text.
Everyday memorise a certain number of sentence,
and target to memorise all within a period of time.

Memorise is the 1st step, then by memorising it, it allow me to zoom into the teachings (in these words), and explore more, question more, and approach teacher more, and apply it in daily life.

As Suodaji Khenpo stressed, memorising such Dharma words is an important practice.

Though my memory is lousy, due to aging,
still need to work hard.

Just shared

Cheers.

Re: Tashichoden's Diary (打死错灯日记)

To me, "mantra" have another definition.
It is the essence of the practice of that specific Buddha/Bodhisttava.
For example, Guru Rinpoche's mantra.
When we read about the benefits of reciting this mantra,
it tells us about the power to remove obstacle (of the main benefits).

So when I recite this mantra, it serves as reminder:
Tashichoden, you are not just seeking the empowerment from Guru Rinpoche
to remove your obstacle.
You need to cultivate and build up yourself,
to become someone that are capable to remove obstacle for sentient beings.
Do what you can, to remove obstacle for people and beings around you.
It can be a small action.
For eg, seeing a cockroach turn upside down, unable to turn around to crawl.
You can just flip it over lightly, then it can crawl again.
If you can do more gradually, do it.

Of course, recitation of mantra will gain many benefits, such as, reborn in heaven, wealth and health etc.
But to me, the greatest benefit I wish for is
to turn me to a better person. to a down-to-earth practitioner of Buddha teachings, that can benefits the beings.

So, mantra may not be in officially mantra form.
For example, a word from Buddha, can be a mantra.
As long as I recite it or think of it, it will subdue my greed, hatred, ignorance, arrogance, laziness and doubts,
then it is mantra.

In short, mantra is not just words I keep reciting in temple, or chanting room.
mantra is not just those words in Sanskrit.

Mantra, same as prostration to Buddha,
it cannot be measured in thousands or million or billion times of recitation.
It should be 24/7, and not limited to action by mouth and tongue (recitation).

If I recite million times of this mantra, but yet I am still not compassionate to beings,
then I consider myself did not complete even 0.0001 times of recitation of this mantra.

just shared

Cheers.

Re: Tashichoden's Diary (打死错灯日记)

That afternoon, I step out from chanting room, sister asked me how is it.
I answer: "Done!"
meaning I had completed my chanting.

Then I immediately lectured myself, in my heart.
"Tashichoden, how can you be 'done', if you are not yet out from samsara?"

I feel ashamed and pull myself up.
There is no "done" for practice, it MUST BE always -"work-in-progress"

Re: Tashichoden's Diary (打死错灯日记)

Actually, there are sufficient time for recitation of mantra,
if I make full use of time.
Work too busy? is just an excuse, I lied to myself always.

In hawker centre = a good time to develop compassion.
People eating meat, eating their father and mother in past lives.
From there, is a great chance to develop compassion and realising impermanence...
is a good time to recite mantra,
dedicate merits to the animal and people
wishing them no reborn in lower realms anymore.
wishing them will reduce till stop eating meat gradually.

When walk to lift, when walk to bus stop,
when walk to MRT station, when inside train,
when walking down the stairs in MRT station or elevator,
when walk to the exit to tap the card,
when waiting for the food at hawker centre
when waiting for colleague to go together for lunch
when walking from my office to warehouse
when taking transport from office back to MRT station
when queue in supermarket/bank/post office etc
when waiting for a page to upload completely
Wow!
so many time or chance to recite mantra!

a simple way I practise is,
walk a step, chant a mantra syllable.
for eg,
Om - one step
Mani - 2nd step...

the mantra is into every step, inhale and exhale, and every action almost.
such as open the door, recite once.
close the door, recite once.
when press the mobile phone button to sms
I keep reciting
wishing every sms will "deliver Dharma" to the receiver.

press the lift button, recite once
while the lift is going up and down, keep reciting

so many way, some very simple step we take,
will accumulate a lot of merits for the motherly beings.

***Above is just my humble sharing.
I still pay attention when I walk on road, at traffic light point or junction, or doing other activities,
as SAFETY COME FIRST.

If reciting mantra will distract me (in my level, I always get distracted)
I will stop for the time being. especially during work that need full concentration.

just shared,

cheers

Re: Tashichoden's Diary (打死错灯日记)

That day, drop my handphone,
quickly pickup, pretty anxious.

I wonder, if I drop the heart of compassion,
if I drop the heart of diligence in practice
if I drop the heart of getting out from samsara

will I be so anxious?
or will I be so alert?
will I be able to pick it up on time?

a typical example,
yesterday, I forget something that is incredibly important and urgent!
I forget that I will die, anytime.

Re: Tashichoden's Diary (打死错灯日记)

Tonight pass by a stall, smell something nice.
Is char siew.
The greed and yummy thought surface out.
I quickly repent from the root of this incident.

I quickly vow, never let the thought of yummy meat arise again, never in my every live.

Being a vegetarian is never easy, cutting away all meat, egg, milk (from animal), and all related food, including not buying any food from non-vege stall, I have tighten control about myself.

But this is just beginng, long journey to go.

But is fulfilling and a sense of freedom, which I never enjoy before.

Wow.

Re: Tashichoden's Diary (打死错灯日记)

Sometimes, it is not just about: if I perform this act, I will create this negative karma, that negative karma......
It is about, if I perform this act, will I hurt my heart of compassion and/or Bodhicitta?

I am not capable to dig into piles of scriptures...just to find a word rom Sakyamuni Buddha to support my doing. What Sakyamuni Buddha did not said (about refraining from a specific activity), does not mean I can do it.

After some time of learning, I will question myself, always:
What if I do this...will it hurt my heart of compassion and/or Bodhicitta?
Even if the act I am going to perform is not forbid by Buddha in the teachings,
if I reason out that is not right, or it will hurt sentient beings in short or long run,
I will forbid myself to do it.

Just shared.

(*above is just my own opinion, not to use for practice guide.)

Re: Tashichoden's Diary (打死错灯日记)

I love this girl, I love that girl.
Everytime I love, I believe that is happiness.
But at times, I ask myself,
if "I love this girl" = happiness,
then I can define this girl as "the source of happiness".
But since she is the "source of happiness",
why sometime she will get sad?
why sometime she will get unhappy?
if she is the source of happiness, she should be 24/7 happy.
So seem like she is not the source of happiness as I think
then how can she bring me happiness...
(here is just a Dharma-related thought.
Of course, love should be selfless, and not to plainly seek happiness from the partner)

just shared.

Re: Tashichoden's Diary (打死错灯日记)

today an old friend, one that like to joke, ask me this question again, why dun you eat meat?
I did not answer him directly, but ask him:
if one day you sit in coffeeshop,
suddenly one stranger come and punch you
how you will feel?

If he feel angry, that is normal.
So how about animal?
they suffer more than a punch from the stranger
they are imprisioned, and slaughter at the end.
so how they feel?

spare a thought for them
not just about this subject
but for most of the subject in life
sometimes I just need to spare a thought, spare a thought, for sentient being.

Re: Tashichoden's Diary (打死错灯日记)

I hope that, all sentient being, who like me,
that dislike me, or even hate the sight of me
or even hate me when they heard of my name or think of me,
or know me thru seeing, hearing or any sense any way
will plant the seed of reborn in Amitabha Pureland.
May they achieve the Ultimate Enlightenment faster than me.

As ordinary being with no practice and realisation at all,
sometimes I will feel negative when people dun like me.
But think back, I am ordinary, I am lousy in skill, low educated,
many flaws in my character,
not good looking, not a kind person
of course people can dislike me, can look down on me
it is alright.

People got right to hate me, they got right to disagreed with me

This is really something I need to improve, every moment.

Re: Tashichoden's Diary (打死错灯日记)

Everyday, I will like or dislike this person or that thing.

Hmm, Got to knock on my own head on this.

I question myself, will Guru Rinpoche dislike someone?
Will Goddess of Mercy dislike something?
Dislike, can grow to hatred.
so How can I allow "dislike" in my heart?

When I do something, I got to ask myself
Will Guru Rinpoche treat this person as what you do?
Will Goddess of Mercy handle this thing as what you do?
If they don't, then why are you doing differently from them?
And Tashichoden, you say you are Buddhist.
学佛?
Do you really mean it?

Most of the time, I feel ashamed and out of words to answer myself.

Re: Tashichoden's Diary (打死错灯日记)

Every morning before step out from bed
Every night before enter into dream,
Must spend 30mins each,
To think of the gratitude of my parents (including past lives),
To think of sentient beings' sufering
To develop Bodhicitta,

I am still lacking in this.

Re: Tashichoden's Diary (打死错灯日记)

When I step into temple, I feel solemn, and dare not think of non-virtuous thing.

But when I step out from there, when I walk on street or in crowded place,
my mind wander to the worldly desire.

Is "temple" only exist in temple?
Is "solemn" only exist in temple? only appear in front of Buddha statues?
Is "respect" only exist when I grasp my hand to bow at the monk or my guru?

They should exist everywhere.

I cannot allow 2 type of Tashichoden exist, ie, one Tashichoden in temple
and the other Tashichoden when out from temple.

There should be only one Tashichoden.
