TEMASEK Holdings is raising money to fund its business by selling 10-year bonds as markets recover and the worst seems to be over for the global economy.
The bonds will be issued by Temasek?s wholly owned subsidiary Temasek Financial under an existing US$5 billion medium-term note programme.
The bond issue will be only the second time that the Singapore investment firm has tapped the bond markets. Temasek Financial said that it 'intends to provide the net proceeds from the offering to Temasek and its subsidiary companies to fund their ordinary course of business.'
Temasek's first issue was also a 10-year bond in 2005. A total of US$1.75 billion was issued to investors, paying a 4.5 per cent coupon rate.
While Temasek did not specify the amount of the issue, such deals usually start at around US$500 million.
The bankers are in the process of marketing the bonds to potential investors and the amount and pricing could be announced within the next few days, market observers say. Dow Jones Newswires said that the size of the bond issue is likely to be in the region of US$1 billion, quoting a person familiar with the deal.
