The Cambodian government said on Wednesday it has named former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra as its economic advisor, and a personal advisor to Prime Minister Hun Sen.
Thaksin, who was ousted in a coup 3 years ago, has been in self-imposed exile since he was convicted on corruption charges last year.
Thailand remains divided between Thaksin's supporters and his opponents who support current Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.
The anti-Thaksin Thai government is certain to react strongly to Cambodia's decision, which comes amid a territorial dispute between the 2 countries over the Preah Vihear temple ruins in the border area.
NHK's correspondent in Bangkok says Cambodia is seeking to take advantage of the political turmoil in Thailand to put pressure on the Thai government on the border dispute.

Bangkok, Thailand (CNN) -- Thailand has withdrawn its ambassador to Phnom Penh after Cambodia appointed fugitive former Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra as an economic adviser, a Thai government official said Thursday.
Along with recalling the ambassador, the Thai government will review further relations with Cambodia, the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
Thaksin, a billionaire businessman who served two terms as prime minister, was ousted in a bloodless coup in 2006. He fled Bangkok last year while facing trial on corruption charges that he said were politically motivated.
Though he has fled the country Thaksin remains a controversial figure in Thailand and there have been violent clashes in the country between pro and anti-Thaksin groups.
Cambodia's hiring of Thaksin is an interference in Thailand's internal and judicial affairs, a Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement said.
Cambodian government spokesman Phay Siphan said Thaskin's economic experience could help Cambodia.

I think in economic wise, cambodia has all the right to employ thaksin, the current thai govt is not only worrying about thaksin movement but also he as a shrewd businessman with good foresight, can cause thai losing out it competition in term of economy.
