When high-powered book editor Margaret (SANDRA BULLOCK) faces deportation to her native Canada, the quick-thinking exec declares that she’s actually engaged to her unsuspecting put-upon assistant Andrew (RYAN REYNOLDS), who she’s tormented for years. He agrees to participate in the charade, but with a few conditions of his own. The unlikely couple heads to Alaska to meet his quirky family (MARY STEENBURGEN, CRAIG T. NELSON, BETTY WHITE) and the always-in-control city girl finds herself in one comedic fish-out-of-water situation after another. With an impromptu wedding in the works and an immigration official on their tails, Margaret and Andrew reluctantly vow to stick to the plan despite the precarious consequences.

A scene from The Proposal
For someone who has said she is sick of romantic-comedy roles, Sandra Bullock is on a roll in The Proposal, reinstating her status as the undisputed rom-com queen of Hollywood (are you reading this, Jennifer Aniston?) despite a two-year hiatus.
Her latest movie uses the typical fool-proof romantic comedy recipe – the leads hate one another, but are bound by circumstances to be together, and end up falling heads over heels for each other.
But before you groan 'cliché galore!', the movie has enough witty, quirky banters and deadpanned moments (mostly by Ryan Reynolds) to keep the audience giggling through the formula.
Bullocks is Margaret, the lady boss from hell in a US publishing firm who enslaves her subordinates, especially her secretary Andrew, played by heartthrob Ryan Reynolds (Xmen Origins: Wolverine).
All bow to her until the day her visa expires, and the state decides to deport her back to her homeland Canada. Margaret then blackmails Andrew into a sham marriage, and pays a weekend visit to his family in Alaska to keep up the lovey-dovey act for the immigration officers.
The fun begins when the fraud husband-to-be comes up with wicked ways to pay her back as the high-flying alpha city girl tries to adjust to the dreary countryside life in killer stilettos.
Both Bullock and Reynolds are fantastic actors, each playing their part to precision – except for the nagging lack of sizzling chemistry and electric sparks you'd except from a couple in love.
Their love-hate duet, however, is a-laugh-a-minute as they try to out-annoy each other while keeping up the sappy front.
The pair is backed up by co-stars Betty White, who plays Reynolds' delightfully overdramatic grandmother, and Oscar Nunez (The Office), who is village minister, store helper and waiter by day and male stripper whenever an occasion for strip dancing arises.
The Proposal is not exactly side-splitting funny throughout, nor does it have enough depth to leave a long lasting impression. And, you need to watch it with a few pinches of salt to ignore multiple loopholes in the rather forced and uninspired script.
However, the cast manages to carry the show well, and it makes good fun for stress-free movie watching. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stori...449788/1/.html | | | | | Re: The Proposal wah!!! i heard so many ppl give 4 - 5 stars for this movie!!! i wanna watch too~ | | |
