Cup Jay had it tough filming The Viral Factor

Jay had it tough filming The Viral Factor
By Chew Wan Ying

He has showcased his agility in last year’s Hollywood flick The Green Hornet, but it is not until Dante Lam’s The Viral Factor that Mandopop’s Golden Boy Jay Chou proves his action hero credentials.

Playing a former law enforcer opposite his long-lost brother (portrayed by Nicholas Tse), Jay, 32, has done almost everything you can ever think of when shooting a Hong Kong action flick. Gunfights and car-chase? Checked. Being suspended in the air? He has done that. Jump off a building? He described it as "a nightmare".

In fact, filming was so rigorous that Chou quipped that, “there’s not a day when we’re in a clean state.”

“I was not the only one who had to perform dangerous stunts. Even the female lead (Lin Peng) had to, too. This movie is definitely the most tiring and difficult for me, but Nicholas had it tougher than me,” said the Taiwanese megastar.

This explained his mixed feelings when he was back to Malaysia again recently to promote the film along with Lam. For your information, The Viral Factor is partially shot here.

Jay Chou plays a former law enforcer who's dragged into the schemes of a criminal organization that involves his long-lost brother (Nicholas Tse).

“While I feel familiar, I have this fear as if I’m back to the set again, what with the director by my side,” he said with a laugh.

By his side, Lam, noted for his gritty action thrillers with a touch of human drama – which helped Nicholas and Nick Cheung bag their first Best Actor awards – described his latest work as “the hardest to film to date”.

None of the stars, including his frequent collaborator Nicholas (who starred in Lam’s Beast Stalker and The Stool Pigeon) expected it to be this tough, he said.

“My crew is worried that no one would want to work with me in the future [laughs]! We filmed action scenes everyday in the hot weather and the cast was required to do dangerous stunts. It’s very challenging to their stamina,” he recalled.

Luckily for him, Jay and the rest were far from quitting.

“Jay was very courageous and was always willing to try. When the actor is willing to perform a dangerous stunt, it would boost the morale of the team. I like it when everyone works hard for a common goal,” he said.

Among the cast and crew who were working their tails off were some Malaysians.

“I dare say that I couldn’t have done this anywhere else in South East Asia other than Malaysia. You should be proud of this, Malaysians.

“The locals who were involved worked very hard for this movie. I love their passion,” enthused Lam.

Big-budget movie. Lots of shooting, explosions and violence. But there were a few touching moments (father/son, brotherly love). Nick Tse's acting is good.
