Tourism Malaysia woos S'pore's seniors

A survey reveals that retirees like to travel, especially to nearby destinations.

AsiaOne | Wed, Apr 6 2011

SINGAPORE - MONEY, time and proximity. These are some reasons why Tourism Malaysia is eyeing Singapore's senior citizen market to woo more them to holiday in Malaysia.

Tourism Malaysia recently participated in a locally organised event, 'Active Ageing Carnival and 50plush Expo 2011', in which it partnered AirAsia and Singapore-based travel agent Fascinating Holidays to promote Malaysia among Singapore retirees.

Tourism Malaysia director in Singapore Zalizam Zakaria told Malaysian news agency Bernama: "We want to concentrate on this category because retirees have all the means to spend on vacations.

"They have all the free time as they don't have to wait for school holidays or take leave to travel.

"Our survey revealed that they like to travel. Instead of remaining in Singapore, the retirees want to get out sometimes."

He revealed that seniors preferred to visit destinations that took two to three hours of travelling time.

Malaysia was in a great position to capture this market because of its proximity to the island, he added.

"Within an hour or 50 minutes of travel time, they are in Malaysia. Within two hours, they can be in Sabah or Langkawi. So, Malaysia is the perfect destination for senior citizens from Singapore."

According to Zalizam, Singapore senior citizens also have Medisave insurance policies, which provides them coverage anywhere in the world, including 12 hospitals in Malaysia.

Please provide a safe and wheelchair-friendly environment for them, as well as all Malaysians.
