Two months after glitch, RWS star ride still closed

Universal Studios Singapore's star attraction remains closed after nearly two months

Wed, May 19, 2010
The New Paper

IT HAS been almost two months.

And the Battlestar Galactica ride at Universal Studios Singapore - its star attraction - remains closed.

No date has been fixed on when visitors can once again get on the ride's distinctive red and blue tracks, said a spokesman for the theme park.

The Battlestar Galactica ride was closed on March 25.

Universal Studios had attributed the closure to a technical glitch detected during a routine morning pre-opening inspection of the ride.

Two weeks ago, a staff member from Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) wrote on its official Facebook page that the theme park had started running a series of tests.

The staff member wrote: "The cycles, which will be run during the evenings when the park is closed, are part of th investigations that we are conducting on (the Battlestar Galactica ride) to determine the cause and solution to the technical problem on one of the ride vehicles.

"There will be no passengers on the roller coaster during the test cycles."

She added: "At this time, we cannot speculate as to when (the ride) will reopen."

RWS spokesman Robin Goh told The New Paper last week that there are no further updates.

The outdoor ride, themed after the hit television series Battlestar Galactica, is billed as the world's tallest duelling roller coaster.

The 90-second ride has sharp turns, vertical loops, cockscrews and a cobra roll. It can also go as fast as 90kmh.

Ms Erica Leaney, 23, a tourist from Australia, said she was "very disappointed" about the long closure.

She was not aware that the ride had been closed and was looking forward to it after she read about the ride on the resort's website.

But when Ms Leaney, who had also been to Universal Studios in Florida, arrived at the theme park the day after the ride was closed, RWS staff were turning people away.

Mr Lee Woon Chiang, partner of Uncle Ringo Trading, which repairs and provides equipment for amusement park rides, said repairs usually take three to six months at most.

"Any longer and the manufacturers will have a lot of people to answer to," said the 57-year-old with over 25 years experience in the industry.

No ride, no money

Mr Lee said: "I'm sure the management wants to get the ride sorted quickly, because a broken ride doesn't make money for them."

Dr Andy Nazarechuk, dean of the University of Nevada Las Vegas, which has a school here, said long ride closures were not uncommon, because testing a ride and getting good engineers to fix it can take many months.

Dr Nazarechuk is confident that the management would "go to extreme lengths" to ensure the ride is absolutely safe before letting the public access it."

He said: "Safety is the top priority. If time is not going to make a difference, the management is going to take as long as they take to meet the criteria for safety.

"Until they check every moving part, they're not going to let someone get hurt on an amusement park ride."
