Depends on your strengths. If you're a creative person, probably narrative. If you're good at writing emotive stories, recount would be good. If you're neither, probably exposition, but exposition you actually have to "study" by memorising data/facts for it.

I'm assuming TS is talking about Os. There's usually a one word topic that can be interpreted and written as a narrative/recount/exposition. Then there's usually 1 purely personal recount essay. And 2 exposition topics. And one more topic where you have to describe a place - if you want to do this one, your vocab must be very good.

If you want to do well with narrative, read poems. If you want to write good emo type of stories, read romance novels, try the romance adult type, although censorship may be involved, the way they describe the emotional state, the sexiness of event and the background is really good. If you want to do descriptive genre, focus on your usage of adjectives, nouns and pronouns.

I'm not sure if O level students are allowed to write anything related to love, romance or sex? Lol, my teacher back then warned us to avoid anything related to such topics, as well as religious topics, politics and supernatural stuffs.

Re: Which type of essay would be easier to score?

I wrote love stories for my N and O levels and always pass them though my teachers never fail to advise me not to. Its your exams, set your stage, do what you deem is best if you think your competitive edge is that. Not let anybody put you down because in their experiences, such does not work. Frankly, if you are the examiner and everyone writes the same, how do you feel about it?

"Ahhh.. another boring Singaporean essay.. don't the teenagers date?"

Re: Which type of essay would be easier to score?

My english is okay I guess. Just that my vocab isn't that fantastic. What is the type of essay whereby for example the topic is about fight. Then, I would give 3 main points for example, fight for power and etc.

Re: Which type of essay would be easier to score?

After reading many model narrative/descriptive essays, I found out that you don't need much vocabulary in order to score an A. Using a moderate amount is no doubt necessary but it mostly comes down to whether your story is good and your sentence structures are fluent. The problem with writing English argumentative essays is that if one of your points is slightly off, then you will get heavily penalized. However, narrative/descriptive essays can never go wrong unless you go heavily out of point (I doubt anyone would go out of point though) hence it is easier to score if your english is weak.
In conclusion it still comes down to what you're comfortable with. In my perspective, if you've not been practicing alot (like me), narrative/descriptive essays should be for you! I'm currently struggling with essays as I always have writers block, can't think of a good story line . Good luck tomorrow for your O levels tomorrow! Let's all aim for As

The essays easiest to score are those that you have a passion to write for. Don't listen to formula or cookie-cutter examples if you don't even believe the stuff you are writing down.

Always write on the subject which you think i have full knowledge of it.
Also better to read more and more before writing anything.

Re: Which type of essay would be easier to score?

My school has always encouraged us to do narrative: personal recount or one word

I personally feel the one-word gives you the most freedom and it's less easy for you to write out of point because the interpretation can be vast.

I feel discursive and argumentative require alot of planning and contextual knowledge in certain cases and under the exam stress, I don't think I'd be able to convincingly argue my case or discuss something without arguing.

But it's up to your own strengths so try exploring, yah? )

Re: Which type of essay would be easier to score?

I guess you're talking about O-levels right? If you're not sure whether you will side-track (which can be a problem for really ambiguous one-word questions which sometimes touch deeper topics we have little knowledge about), then avoid one-word. Narrative is fun to write but SOME teachers get skeptical if your plot is too fantastical. Personally I dislike expository (i.e. argumentative) essays but they're so important in JC (whether GP, KI, or Geography) that you might as well start practising with your O levels
