There no option to let you select window or linux.
you choose which one you want to boot at bios.

Set your bios to boot from ext hd if available. Then when you want ubuntu, plug it in. When you want windows, plug it out.

Re: Using External Hard Disk for Ubuntu

Can. You have to set it to boot from your HDD at the bios. Exact step I not sure but I've seen my friend doing it before.

If you didn't add the boot sequence to USB, it will never boot from USB even though your external HDD or thumbdrive have the MBR similarly to internal HDD as well if you remove the HDD 0 or 1 from your boot sequence it won't boot to OS either

Re: Using External Hard Disk for Ubuntu

Change your boot sequence in BIOS.
Move your USB boot all the way up, so the next time your computer starts, it will try to boot from a USB device.

If you want Ubuntu, plug in your hard disk.
If you want Windows, unplug your hard disk.

simple right
