Vision 2030 plans to mould S'pore sports landscape

Vision 2030 plans to mould S'pore sports landscape

SINGAPORE: Ideas for a dedicated sports university, such as the United Kingdom's renowned Loughborough University, could well become a reality here, as Vision 2030's 23-member steering committee mull suggestions to help mould the country's sports landscape.

More than 200 suggestions from the public have been posted on the Vision 2030 website (www.vision2030.sg) since it went "live" last month, including proposals for a sports college and a second sports school.

At present, the Nanyang Technological University offers a four-year degree in sport science and management, with sports-related diploma programmes also available in a number of polytechnics here.

Under the Vision 2030 initiative, the Singapore Sports Council and the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports are engaging people from the public and business community to explore and develop proposals on how sport can best serve Singapore's future needs. Details of the sports masterplan will be announced next year.

Speaking to Today after the BMW sponsorship announcement for the 2011 Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore on Thursday, Singapore Sports Council chief executive officer Lim Teck Yin said: "We are currently in the process of analysing each of those comments and feedback they've provided ...

"It's a bit premature to discount anything at the moment, whether it's a sports university or college of sport within an existing university. We know today that there are currently sports related programmes in some of our universities and I think these could be developed further.

"So whether it, in the end, results in a college of sport or whether it results in a proposal on how different schools and education institutions will embrace sport as a core curriculum tied in with their education objectives, that is something that we have to see going forward."

Some 270 ideas to shape S'pore's sports scene

Some 270 ideas to shape S'pore's sports scene

SINGAPORE: A website created to engage Singaporeans on the future direction of sports in Singapore, has attracted over a thousand hits, since its launch three weeks ago.

The online community has also generated some 270 ideas to promote sporting excellence.

Vision 2030 shapes the future of Singapore sports over the next two decades.

Since the public feedback exercise was launched on July 19, the Singapore Sports Council said it has been well received.

Singaporeans from all age groups have come forward with detailed suggestions.

Quite a few touched on giving opportunities for more to indulge in sports.

"A man in his sixties continues to have an interest to play soccer, but the pool of soccer players that he can actually engage with is diminishing. He can't obviously go out there and play with a bunch of 18-year-olds. So he is asking us about masters categories, (and) masters leagues," said Singapore Sports Council CEO Lim Teck Yin.

Another proposal - public pools, that can be modified so the elderly can use them for their health and fitness needs.

Other areas of concern - the lack of facilities for sports, something the sports council thinks can be solved with more innovative use of current resources.

The first set of recommendations is expected to be out by early 2012.

But the process does not end there.

Mr Lim said: "When we are at the stage of implementing strategies and plans that emanate out of the Vision 2030 Project, I think it is our responsibility to continue to engage the stakeholders because in implementing you will also learn and sharpen your thinking about some of the things that we are putting out there."

The public can still continue to send their feedback through the website.

Besides the website, SSC will also be engaging some sectors of the population through focus group discussions over the next few weeks, and such face-to-face discussions would allow the Council to reach out to those who are not Internet savvy.
