Where to watch the World Cup in Singapore?

Where to watch the World Cup in Singapore?

The 2014 FIFA World Cup is set to kick off in a matter of days.*And if you want to catch the action with a crowd, our reporter tells you what your options are.

SINGAPORE:*If you support England, Germany, Australia or the Netherlands, Harry's @ Claymore might just be the place for you to catch the World Cup. Mr*David Yong, operations manager at Harry's Bar says their clientele includes expats from those countries.

The Claymore joint has two big screens and one regular-sized one, enough to accommodate 120 people. Harry's is also screening matches at its Esplanade and Shenton Way branches.

"The best thing is all our guests can scream and shout at the top of their lungs without having to worry about disturbing their neighbours at the end of the day," said Mr Yong.

Bars like Harry's and Muddy Murphy's, which will also screen the matches, have each had to fork out up to S$10,000 per outlet for the World Cup.*The steep price is one of the reasons many coffee shops are not getting in on the action.*Other reasons include the awkward timings of the matches, and difficulties in obtaining a liquor licence past 4am.

However, Holland Village Food Court is bucking the trend. Its owner, Ms Jess Ong, a*football fan, paid S$2,600 in subscription fees to screen the World Cup matches.*

Ms Ong expects a modest profit of no more than 20 per cent, but says she*believes customers will come because of the heartland appeal.*"In the coffee shop people can wear slippers, they can wear shorts, they can wear anything as they just sit here. Sometimes, people also put up their legs, and talk. But if you go to a pub, sometimes you need to dress nicely, and your behaviour would have to be a bit different," she said.

40 Community Clubs (CC) islandwide will be showing World Cup matches live and for free as well.*Buona Vista CC for instance,*will screen the matches in its multi-purpose hall, which has a seating capacity of 300.*There will also be fringe activities such as football-related contests.*In a statement earlier this month, the People's Association said it hopes the sessions will inspire community bonding.*It also hopes to ignite passion for football.

Fast-food chain McDonald's*will also be screening the matches at 39 of its more than 50 24-hour outlets across Singapore.*

'Overwhelming response' to World Cup screenings at CCs: PA

'Overwhelming response' to World Cup screenings at CCs: PA

More than half a million people turned up at 58 Community Clubs showing World Cup matches 'live' over the past month, says the People's Association. They also demonstrated strong community spirit.

POSTED: 14 Jul 2014 21:46

SINGAPORE: More than 570,000 residents watched the World Cup at Community Clubs (CCs) over the past month, the People's Association (PA) said. It reported "overwhelming response" to the screenings in a news release as the tournament wrapped on Monday (July 14).

The quarter-final match between France and Germany attracted the largest crowd, drawing 44,000 people across 58 CCs.

Better yet, the PA said "strong community spirit was clearly evident" as neighbours arranged to come together voluntarily in the wee hours of the morning to help clean up the premises and stack the chairs after the screenings. Some even brought food to share with CC staff, as a simple but warm gesture of thanks.

The PA promises to team up with Community Sports Clubs to organise more sports clinics and carnivals.

"We are delighted that the World Cup screenings at the CCs has brought together so many families, friends and neighbours, and helped strengthen family bonds, friendships and neighbourliness. We thank residents for their overwhelming support and positive feedback, and will continue to work with partners to bring similar screenings to the CCs," said Mr Ang Hak Seng, Chief Executive Director of the PA.
