ways to improve english for the new syllabus

hi! so i really hope to gain some tips on how could i improve my english as I'll be taking my os this year which is a few months away. A way that can help me improve quickly, i know reading helps but its a long term thing.

Being someone who is weak in english, i tried doing practices on my own and request my teacher to mark it . however, i have no idea what i should look out for or do with the mistakes i had made. So all i did is practice and practice and not review my mistakes , so yeah no improvements. So what exactly should i do to improve? and how can i improve my writing? I usually score either a C or B for english. But i really need to push it up to an A for o's. appreciate your help

I was told that to improve my English, I have to watch Channel NewsAsia, read The Straits Times, converse in English most of my time, Hang out with ABC... eTC... The list goes on, well I ain't good at English either but constantly trying to improve my vocabulary and grammar too for that matter... Half man half amazing... LOL

In my humble opinion, there is no such thing as too late... I would rather say better late than ever.... Or should I say, consider not that you are late but start as of now...

If you should need a little hand here, do let me know... I may not be as good as you think but definitely be worthy of helping ya'out...

Take it slowly and move on steadily... Don't give yourself too much pressure in the course of learning... Patience is the key buddy

Re: ways to improve english for the new syllabus

I think need to go back to the basics like, prepositions, grammar, tenses, adjectives, nouns, pronouns, plural, singular.....
after this should improve on vocabulary and get all the meanings right ( every words you know). e.g "compared with" and "compared to", "compare with" and "compare to" although one word differences but actually it meanings are totally different. I remembered one of my english lessons in my student days, my english teacher said, there are only "buffaloes" in english and there is no such words as "water buffaloes" in english because buffaloes itself is already "water cow (mandarin)", and water buffaloes is like "water water cow (mandarin)".
then, focus on writing, like punctuation, each puntuation has meanings, how to place it appropiately will make the sentences sounds and means differently.
SPEAK MORE, WRITE more, READ MORE after all above.

For situational writing, try to make your descriptions as vivid as possible. For example, instead of writing 'It will rain heavily at night.', you can change it to something like 'Ominous thunderclouds litter the pitch-black sky, forewarning us of the impending torrential downpour.', which is far more descriptive and has that 'wow' factor.

Re: ways to improve english for the new syllabus

Paper 1, there isn't really much difference. Editing just tests your grammar skills. There's a relatively fixed structure for email and compo as well. If you're a narrative person, I'd advise you to focus on expository. Narrative may not come out. When writing expository, you just need the points and you'll be able to write a decent essay. Writing more essays for your teachers to mark and reading model essays and absorbing the points will also help. Read newspapers and watch the news to broaden your knowledge. General knowledge is very important for expository essays.

Paper 2 is the killer for me. From what I've (attempted to) analyse, there's now sort of a "format" to answer questions. For example, in visual text, if they ask you why a picture is used. Pictures usually link to "visual representation". If they ask you why there's a sentence or phrase that has the word "you" in it, it's to make the reader feel "personally involved". For comprehension questions, you must be able to master the questions which requires you to find phrases and words. Those are usually giveaways that test your vocabulary and understanding. For inferential questions, I think you'll do best with more practices. However, each essay is different and has its own ways of answering. I find it ridiculous we have to put ourselves in the authors shoes since it's only natural that readers have their own opinion.

Listening comprehension can be hard. My Sec 3 EOY, I got full marks. That's a secured 10%. My Sec 4 MYE I only got around 23/30. I lost marks where others gained marks, and I gained marks where others lost marks. I have no idea what the hell happened. I was probably "not on form" that day.

Oral is still very foreign to me. I only got an average mark in my class. Just do what your teacher tells you to do. Try to treat the examiner like a friend or like someone here. Just give your opinions. Think carefully and analyse the question before you answer. Even though quantity matters, quality is more important here. Only after you can give quality answers, then you try to speak more. My English teacher went to be an Oral examiner a while back. She shared this story with my class. A student she examined was well groomed. His speaking skills was excellent. It was obvious he would be a Band 1 student. However, he wasn't very mature in his ideas. His ideas had elements of sexism against women, saying how they should stay at home and cook, etc. Thanks to his "smart" ideas, he got brought down to a Band 2. It also ruined my teacher's impression of him.

I hope what I've shared is useful to you. Good luck for your O Levels! I need to improve my English as well! B3 isn't enough, A2 isn't enough, not even A1 is! Haha!
