Re: web hosting at home

I would likely recommend colocating your server in a data center which has the right facilities meant for data centers.

Re: web hosting at home

Hi kazeto,

Maybe you want to get Shared Web Hosting from provider and start hosting your files instead ?

* It would be more cheaper :-)

* * If needed i can recommend you some stable providers.

Hi Cesario,

Depends on him/her . . .

Maybe he/she hosting personal files only ?

* Host at IDC is much more better and stable.

Re: web hosting at home

If hosting personal files and just want to access / share these files, why not get NAS servers such as Buffalo Linkstation Live? Can access remotely via browser and FTP, some even can configure security such as Useername & password for controlled access.

Refer to Buffalo NAS Web Access as an example.

Hi Calis,

NAS is another solution for him/her :-)

* NAS = Network-attached storage

Re: web hosting at home

actually its a CMS system and leave application system running on apache which is self configured, so its more convenient to host the whole thing at home just for showcase
when needed. thus i am more interested for a temporary short hosting to display on the web when needed as the web server has rather customized configs.

Re: web hosting at home

Thanks so much everyone for ur help.

@sovering, i think forwarding port 80 should be enough ba?

unless local isp dont let incoming request to port 80.

Re: web hosting at home

I used to have the same idea but it's too troublesome to do everything like getting a static ip, setting up a pc as a server, etc.

Not to mention that our ISP is not that reliable. I get disconnected every other day.

Re: web hosting at home

I tried maybe one year ago, but starhub blocks port 80 outgoing/incoming request, whatever the term, I think, other ports work if you configure it, but you need to type in something like xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:443 to access the site. FTP probably works.

I read somewhere that ISPs blocks 80 because virus can spread through there.

So if you really want to host your website, get a cheap host. I can provide hosting, if you want.. I got a cpanel reseller account. You should have your own domain name, I host you for free for 6 months to for you to test out, but no proxies, server intensive stuff or illegal/adult stuff.

I also got a mediatemple GS account, but theres no individual control panel for users, only for the admin, me.

Re: web hosting at home

Hosting your server at home is possible but might not be a good solution as the ISP tend to dc you when you're not using the internet for certain time as to save resource for the ISP which they can provide access to others instead since you're using internet.
