I won't be surprised if Norman is even borderline better than Norton.

Re: What antivirus is the best ?

In accessing which antivirus to use, there are a few basic things I would consider:
  1. Detection rate - There's only chance of removal of virus when it can be picked up by the av. The removal rate can only go as high as the detection rate.
  2. Removal rate - How the av handles detected viruses is an important consideration point. While no av can guarantee 100% removal, if the av cannot remove many of the viruses it detects, it's not a good choice.
  3. Memory footprint - If the av hogs too much memory and processor time, most users would rather take the risk by leaving their computers unprotected.
  4. Compatibility - There are times when an av actually cause system instability prompting error messages to users and even freezing computers up. What's the use of an av when it renders your computer unusable?

After these considerations, you can look at the other features the av offers.

Antivirus usually have got both end-user and corporate editions, and most of the time people refer to end-user editions. Corporate editions will have more features and more robust than end-user editions. It really boils down to what you need.

These are really good tips but one thing to note is that not all are tech savvy and can understand all these...Hmm...

For points 1 & 2, go to web sites that compare the various antivirus.

While points 3 & 4, read reviews on tech web sites

Lastly, ask tech savvy people which av they use, and why.

Re: What antivirus is the best ?

In terms of free anti-virus, AVG currently the best

But for Paid Anti-virus, to me i think ESET NOD 32 is quite good and scanning and detection time is very very very fast for me.
Have been using ESET NOD 32 Antivirus for 3years alrdy...
Very very user-friendly~

Re: What antivirus is the best ?

I don't know if I've already posted in this thread, I remember posting in an anti-virus related thread quite a long time ago...

Anyway I'm currently using Avast!, and have been for quite a long time now. I'm using the free version though but so far so good. Used to use AVG which worked well for awhile, then suddenly gave my computer lots of problems (made it almost unusable), and Norton which I found totally useless.

Re: What antivirus is the best ?

Microsoft Security Essentials & AVIRA are good. friends and i used it before . get symantec end point protection (its ex, if u can afford it) but the best, IMO.

AVG -> currently using , getting crappier as it keep detecting the exe files in games that i have in steam client as virus , it even hangs after i choose the program to exclude it from virus list causing a big lost to my game's exe program, which i spend hours repairing

Avast -> so so , they were good in the past, but seems to be overshadowed by AVG, AVIRA...etc

NOD32 -> not known , but heard good reviews from em from forums

MCaffee & PC tools -> looks lame , i used macaffee previously, seems it keep letting virus get in until comp is unbootable(maybe they improve already, but once bitten twice shy).

Norton -> good, but not user friendly , can screw up your comp if u do not know how to configure the program (use with caution or under supervision from someone expert in it)

kasperasky -> crappy anti-virus , IMO. keep clashing with most online games (for gamers and hardcore gamers, use it at your peril)

Re: What antivirus is the best ?

I voted for Avira as I use it with Synei System Utilities to clean up, speed up, secure, and repair my system. From the time, I have started using both these softwares for my computer I did not face any issues with the system.

Re: What antivirus is the best ?

Problem is, anti-virus software alone is in no way sufficient these days. There are lots of other malware that aren't classified as viruses, that are even more damaging, and for which all of these anti-virus programs are mostly useless against.

Eg. Search Engine Redirects, Rootkits, Trojans, Backdoors, Worms, Adware, Spyware, Keyloggers, Hidden Programs, etc.

Go ahead and buy a good anti-virus software, but don't naively think an anti-virus program alone can secure your PC. If you begin to encounter problems that anti-virus programs can't solve, instead of futilely buying other anti-virus software, it's time to explore more advanced anti-malware software that handles more than just mere viruses (which ironically, due to their fame and notoriety, are now the least dangerous threat; the unknown enemies are the deadliest ones).
