If you were the President of the US and there is a major virus epidemic spreading across your country. It is expected to kill 600 people. Your advisor tell you that you have 2 choices of treatment plans:
plan 1 - 200 people will be saved.
plan 2 - 1/3 chance that all 600 people will be saved and 2/3 chance that all 600 will die.
Which plan will you choose?

Which ever option the President choose, his Chief of staff will still tell the media and the American ppl that, the govt is doing their best to solve this crisis.
I;ll choose 1, as that's the min amt of ppl who can be save 100%.
If I choose 2, and I fail, the political backlash is too big even on the presidency.

Plan 2.
My principal in life has always been " No risk taken, and you'll always be mediocre "
Example, you decide to take up a employee based job, your salary will always be fixed across the line. You can't grow richer. Whereas if you're a risk taking self-employed, how much you earn will be entirely up to the efforts you put in.
There is no way anyone can improve if they were to always stick to the comfortable, common route. Be daring enough to go for something fresh, yet risky. At the end of the day, even if you fail, at least you learnt something. And the next time when something like this happens again, you know darn sure how to deal with it.
Of course, all risks taken has to be carefully calculated and executed. If not, its just plain dumb and it produce a recipe to disaster instead.
If the plan is reasonably sound, I don't think there will be a backlash even if the plan failed. People will be understanding enough.

In my opinion, I would go for plan 2.
It reminds me of the train story where u standing on the track switcher and you can choose to save the 1 kid that is playing on the closed track or the 20 kids that are playing on the unclosed track. When u made the decision to switch the track to let the train run on the closed track towards the 1 kid and saving the 20, what results may happen is that the track that is closed may have been a dead end track. Which results in killing more ppl in the train.
So in this case plan 2, got 1/3 chance the cure could be found and all 600 ppl can be saved. As for plan 1, it means that we will be sacrificing 400 ppl, on top of that it may means that no cure for the virus only quarintin or elimination was done. So future such problems may escalate again. So I will take the risk to go for plan 2.

plan 2. USA have so many people.
dying additional 400won't make a difference, neither is sacrificing that 200.
Given this situation, it will be nicer to take gamble.
but of course, if the virus is to infect 100000000000 people.
Then maybe plan 1 will be a more viable one. If everyone is dead. Who will reproduce? | |

Which results in killing more ppl in the train. | oh i saw a short clip on something like this before. about a boy living with his father the track operator. so usually the boy will play around the area. 1 day his friend went in by accident onto the track then at the same time a train with alot of ppl is approaching. so this boy went in to save his friend and his father was forced to close the track and crush him or let the train crash and everyone else die.
