Why diesel-powered cars are better

Why diesel-powered cars are better

SINGAPORE: Experts are calling them the most practical solution for "green" motoring today.

Traffic in Singapore

Modern diesel-powered vehicles, they say, represent the "bridging technology" that's needed before electric vehicles become commonplace.

It's estimated that if half of all vehicles on Singapore roads had modern diesel engines, 183,000 tonnes less of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, would be emitted each year.

Global Marketing & Sales e-mobility Asia Pacific assistant vice president Alexander Kraus said: "Standard petrol cars, I would say, would need about eight litres of petrol for 100 kilometres.

"And a diesel car can run the same distance with about five litres, or, with the same amount of fuel, like eight litres, you can run up to 140 kilometres".

So with better fuel efficiency and less carbon footprints, why aren't more switching to diesel?

Singapore Environment Council executive director Howard Shaw said: "The general perception is diesel vehicles are still pollutive, and they don't perform as well as petrol-driven vehicles.

"But for modern, clean diesel, that's no longer the case. In fact, consumption for modern clean diesel can improve by as much as 40 per cent compared to petrol".

Re: Why diesel-powered cars are better

As usual, sg is about 10 years behind the rest of the world.

About 40% of passenger cars sold in UK and Europe are diesel. To implement diesel in sg is easy for passenger cars, if it weren't for all the additional taxes in between. Besides, petrol tax in sg is good money for the govt.

why aren't more people switching to diesel? ask the govt.

Re: Why diesel-powered cars are better

Diesel-powered cars are better in terms of economic savings. However, performance is definitely not as good compared to gasoline-powered cars. Gasoline is still preferred for better performance in cars due to high Research Octane Number. That's why taxis are still using diesel-powered engines till now. Technically speaking, diesel vehicles are still very pollutive compared to gasoline vehicles, even with improved engines. If you study Chemistry, you should know why?

Thus TS, can you please do some homework and not posting people's work. What people say may not be true. Trying to earn post count in a stupider way. Summarize them in your own words.

Performance wise, diesels can be made to run alongside petrol counterparts. A famous example is the Audi R10 Le Mans racer, which is diesel powered and has won the 24 hour race.

The high RON number is not a reason for better performance, it is the requirement for high compression ratio petrol engines to prevent pre-ignition, which is the reason for that performance. But diesels work on compression ignition and have a much higher compression ratio than petrol engines (one of the reasons for its higher efficiency). Also, diesel engines now are almost always turbocharged.

Taxis are using diesels because they are more fuel economical. The very old taxis and trucks that spew black smoke are the 1st and 2nd generation diesel engines, which are gradually being phased out. Modern diesel engines are actually more expensive than petrol engines because they are built more robustly and have higher 'technology' with common rail direct injection, multiple catalysts, particulate traps, and the later cars with adblue (urea injection).

Technically speaking, modern diesel engines are more efficient, advanced and cleaner than petrol engines.
