Winamp to shut down after 15 years

SINGAPORE — After 15 years, Winamp Media Player will no longer be available, it was announced today (Nov 21).

In a statement released on its website, Winamp users were advised to download the latest version of the Winamp Media player before Dec 20 as the “players will no longer be available for download” after the date.

“Thanks for supporting the Winamp community for over 15 years,” it said.

The reason for the closure has not been released, although Winamp’s first general manager, Mr Rob Lord, had hinted that there were “a few layers of mismanagement by AOL”, in an interview with tech website Ars Technica.

Winamp was bought over by AOL in 1999, two years after it was launched. The player was known for its highly customisable user interfaces, known as “skins”.

Several users have gone to the Winamp forum in response to the announcement, and a petition to take the service open source has been started.

One user by the name of Plastyglove said: “I’ve been using Winamp for the last 10 years and it’s the only music player I’ve ever bothered to use on Windows. Not that I haven’t tried others, but Winamp was simply a cut above every one else and I always came back to Winamp.”

Another user by the name of Jay said: “Open source Winamp would be a novelty at best. Don’t get me wrong, Winamp is pretty awesome but Winamp interest has been on the decline for several years. Not sure how open source improves that situation.”
