Wishing you a Great Depression and a Hungry New Year: The bestselling credit crunch Christmas cards

When the going gets tough, the tough get . . . giggling.

That seems to be the message behind a range of Christmas cards for those who are fed up with the relentless financial gloom.

The new range of credit crunch Christmas cards designed by artist Andrew Shaffer, have become a surprise bestseller in the UK

Designed by artist Andrew Shaffer, they feature vintage photos of the Great Depression - with modern captions that poke fun at high fuel prices, unemployment and the housing market slump.

One card shows a picture of a man in a snow storm with the slogan: 'Hold onto your hat. The worst is yet to come.'

Another design shows a glum fellow guzzling down a bowl of soup for his Christmas dinner and the words: 'I hope you like soup.'

Inside, the greeting says: 'Have a Great Depression and a Happy New Year.'

A third card shows a child berating his mother as she prepares potatoes for dinner.

He says: 'Potatoes again? But it's Christmas dinner, Ma! Can't we at least do something special?' Inside, it says: 'Why don't you find the neighbour's dog?'

'The response to the cards has been phenomenal,' Mr Shaffer said. 'I think people need to laugh now more than ever. Humour is essential to make it through these tough times.

'I wanted to contrast today's financial crisis with the Great Depression to show that things are not as bad as people believe.'

The cards are produced by greeting card company Order of St Nick and are available online at www.depressingtimes.com.
