Granted, a real tree is sometimes hard to come by in the urban jungle but this woodpecker stunned passersby after mistaking a hard, concrete lampost for a tasty bit of bark.
The colourful bird bit off more than he could chew after landing on the lampost, which was covered in lichen and moss, and tried in vain to hammer his beak into the stone in search of a tasty grub.
Bird brain: Trying his luck on the man made structure
But the only thing this Great Spotted Woodpecker got from the 20-year-old post in North Yorkshire was a beakful of stone.
Woodpeckers are famous for the hammering noise they make with their long, pointed beaks.
But what the birds are really doing is boring into the bark of a tree in search of a tasty morsel.

But the only thing this Woodpecker got was a sore beak
After hammering a hole into the bark the Woodpecker extracts the unlucky grub with a long barbed tongue.
Unfortunately the only thing this feathered bird-brain could look forward to was a sore beak.
After finally realising there was nothing to eat in the impenetrable post he flew off in search of richer peckings but not before giving the man made structure a last once over - perhaps he'll be back for seconds?
