Work life balance and chances for career progression feature in survey of SMEs

SINGAPORE: According to a local survey, some of the key attributes which help Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) retain and attract talent include allowing employees freedom to work on their own initiative and recognising and appreciating an employees' work were some key features for attracting talent.

Office workers in Singapore

A survey done jointly by the Singapore National Employers Federation and StrategiCom (a global brand strategy consulting firm), threw up some interesting results from two studies done by them at the height of the recession in 2008 and in a growing economy in 2010.

But this year, employees are looking for opportunities for long term career progression and an attractive overall compensation and benefits package.

They also want companies to provide work life balance, an attribute which did not feature in the 2008 survey, probably when employees were more concerned about retaining their jobs in a recession period.

However one factor which continues to receive high attention amongst workers whether there's a downturn or not is job security.

SNEF said these survey findings will be one of the topics which would be discussed at its CEO and employers summit at the end of this month.

It's being held as part of SNEF's 30th anniversary celebrations.

Both Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew will address the CEOs gathering while Manpower Minister Gan Kim Yong and NTUC Chief Lim Swee Say will join Mr Stephen Lee during a tripartite dialogue.

The summit will focus on challenges in leadership and management for productivity and sustainable growth for the next ten years.

Its findings will be used by SNEF to chart some of the challenges which need to be addressed to achieve the goal of two to three percent productivity growth for Singapore in the next ten years.
