Mum of dead biker says:
I wouldn't have let him go
S'pore childhood buddies die in M'sia hit-and-run. They were on their way to Thailand to get injured friend's bike
THEY were childhood friends who were always seen together.
They had even gone to Genting Highlands for a holiday on their motorbikes.
But they decided to make a U-turn back to Thailand via the North-South highway in Malaysia after stopping in Singapore for 1 1/2 hours.
All because another friend, who was on a biking trip along the Thai border, sustained a hand injury and could not ride his own motorbike home.
They are part of a group of bikers which traverses Malaysia and Thailand.
Their kindness proved to be fatal.
Mr Muhd Redhuan Hussain, 25, a deliveryman and his buddy Roslan Rahim, 24, a storekeeper, were killed near Ipoh on their way to Thailand on Tuesday night.
Now, their grieving families have to bury their bodies today.
Mr Redhuan had briefly told his sibling that he was leaving for the Thai border, but he did not tell his mother.
At her home in Tampines St 84, Mr Redhuan's mother, Madam Salmah Abu Bakar, 50, told Berita Harian: 'If I knew he was going to Thailand, I would have disallowed it.
'I scolded his sibling for letting him leave, because he just returned from KL.'
She told the New Straits Times: 'I was surprised that he would make another trip north and was worried.
'He had earlier told us he would sponsor our umrah (pilgrimage) this year.'
It was common for her son to help his friends in need, she said.
He would respond to them even if he had just reached home from work at midnight.
She also added: 'Redhuan and Roslan were always together.'
Mr Roslan's sister, Ms Maimunah, 35, told Berita Harian from their Pasir Ris flat that her brother was to have celebrated his 24th birthday tomorrow.
Earlier on Tuesday, the two friends had just returned to Singapore from Kuala Lumpur on their motorbikes.
Mr Redhuan was riding with his younger brother while Mr Roslan was with his fiancee. The four had spent the weekend in Genting Highlands.
Then a call for help from their injured friend came at 2pm, while they were on their way to Singapore.
The two friends dropped off their loved ones in Tampines and Pasir Ris at 3pm before setting off for Thailand on Mr Roslan's bike 1 1/2 hours later. Mr Redhuan was riding pillion.
They were killed instantly in a hit-and-run accident along the North-South highway near Simpang Pulai near Ipoh, 4 1/2 hours after leaving home, at about 9pm.
Their 1,300cc superbike hit the bumper of a car, causing them to fall.
An oncoming vehicle could not stop in time and killed them instantly, said Ipoh district deputy traffic chief ASP Razali Bakar yesterday.
The accident caused a traffic jam, according to The Star.
Said ASP Razali: 'They were believed to have landed on the road after losing control of their machine while trying to overtake a car.' One car hit them, but the driver didn't stop and sped off instead.
Another oncoming car then rammed into them. That driver informed the police, he added.
Mr Redhuan's father and Mr Roslan's brother claimed the bodies from Ipoh Hospital yesterday afternoon.
Mr Roslan last called his fiancee, 22-year-old Ms Suriyani, at 5.30pm on Tuesday to inform her that he was in Pagoh, Johor.
She recalled: 'I received several calls from his friends in Thailand asking about his whereabouts. I SMSed him but there was no reply. It was only at 3am that police informed me about the accident.'
