YOG volunteers: Food being served much better now

Much better food being served now
By Ion Danker – August 22nd, 2010

Volunteers at the ongoing Youth Olympic Games have given a big thumbs-up to the food currently being served.

Those Yahoo! SEA spoke to noticed a distinct improvement in the quality and range of cuisines available in recent days, particularly at the Youth Olympic Games Village (YOV).

Republic Polytechnic student Anthony Ng, 20, said, “Initially the food was really horrible before the first article about the food was out, then it got so much better. I can see the clear difference between the previous and new vendor because now, the menu is changed every day.”

Another volunteer, Marcus Seetoh, agreed.

“I’ve eaten at the volunteer dining hall and it is indeed better. I think there are either five or six dishes served now and we also have desserts like ice cream now. The organisers have certainly heard our cries,” said the 20-year-old student.

More variety of food available for volunteers at their meals.

SFI, a subsidiary of the Singapore Airport Terminal Services (Sats), was recently in the spotlight after reports criticised the poor quality of food being served to volunteers.

Another serious case of food poisoning saw 21 people suffer from diarrhoea after consuming their meals at two separate games venues.

It’s understood the clear improvement in the quality of food being served is down to SFI outsourcing the preparation and supply of volunteers’ meals to local catering giant Kriston Food & Beverage.

Kriston has been in the food catering business for over 20 years and is also in charge of the food and merchandise outlets at the Singapore Pavilion at the ongoing World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China.

A spokesperson from the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC) confirmed that while Kriston is preparing food for the volunteers at the Games Village, Singapore Food Industries (SFI) will continue to supply food for the 5,000 resident athletes and officials.

“Given the magnitude of the Games, we appointed several caterers to provide athletes and workforce meals at the YOV, competition and non-competition venues. The other caterers include Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre Pte Ltd and Stamford Catering Pte Ltd,” he said.

Ice-cream is a big hit among the volunteers.

SFI was initially serving both athletes and volunteers at the YOV.

Kriston was called in by SYOGOC on August 12 and started operations at the YOV two days later.

The company’s managing director, Charles Tan, told Yahoo! SEA that operations at the village have been running smoothly for the past week and volunteers are pleased with the food served.

“It was one big turnaround for us after we took on the job and we have over 100 staff working daily round the clock but it’s really worth it because you can see the volunteers are happier,” he said.

“We’ve received positive feedback from the volunteers and they are pleased with the food. They [volunteers] sacrifice their time to help out in the games so we are glad they can look forward to a variety of meals while carrying out their duties,” he added.

He declined to reveal details of the last-minute contract with SYOGOC or why they were appointed to replace SFI for volunteers’ meals, but he said his team is relishing this opportunity to be part of the historic games in Singapore.

“It’s a national pride to be part of YOG and we are taking it positively despite the heavy schedule but it’s certainly an honour to be invited by SYOGOC and we are here to deliver not only quality food for the volunteers, but also quality service,” said the 46-year-old.

Re: YOG volunteers: Food being served much better now

u know it took me sometime to realise how come this is not recongise in the first place? how come 300m budget is not enough to give volunteer good food? but the issue about why YOG is hated is not only with food issue, it has to do with treatment of people too, with such inhumane treatment will they get to host the game again?
