SINGAPORE students spend 27 hours a week playing video games like Maple Story and World of Warcraft.
The statistic, uncovered by an ongoing National Institute of Education (NIE) study, is raising concern over the impact of such games, and the extent of gaming addiction here.
The three-year study, the biggest of its kind in Singapore, is looking at more than 3,000 primary and secondary school students' gaming habits, and will be finished at the end of the year.
NIE declined to reveal more about it pending an analysis of the results.
One thing is clear though: Singapore youth really like video games.
Acting Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts Lui Tuck Yew, who revealed the 27-hour statistic at a Singapore Press Club event last month, said he was 'quite surprised and a little bit shocked' that the figure was so high.
Status Update:I'm back in town! But maybe going back to Malaysia...15-07-2010, 07:38 AM

Im still playing games, as long they are still able to judge between life and virtual.
It's all fine by me, if your child just ignore cleaning the dishes or lack of responsible. Its time for some corporal punishment =X

Skirts & Jokes are the same, the longer the better
during my younger days as the technologies are aint that advance meaning - where no video games, no internet, no lanshop...kids at my time leisure are mainly sports like snooker, basketball, soccer, table tennis, going to stadium and watch malaysia cup (last time singapore team still in the malaysia league till the late 80s), playing marbles, cycling around with our precious BMX bike.....we spend more times outdoor rather than hooking on computers.
Nowadays communication is so advance and development of online games is getting better and better. I have already forsee this problem and start worrying for my kid. As what has been mentioned earlier, not only self control but proper parental guidance must be there to prevent the kids from overdosing in internet gaming. I mean think about it there is pro and cons...as for me, if i dont allow my son to play games, he will explore in other areas...maybe like cigarette, drugs, woman? well i can only say is agar agar...the society is not helping much either. Therefore good friends/company are important as they can influence. God bless us
woah.. you can't imagine of the worst in online gaming thing that happens in US. So many slackers that eat and eat and sleep and play their online game. I'm addictive to my online world as well but I have my limits, I still work, I still study and I still have dreams to fulfill in life. But look at them, they just wanna play and and play like there's no day and night. I'd seen some super obese ppl playing(ya know what I meant), this ppl just ruin their life sigh.. Some I met online are drug addict too, they smoke weeds and drink(alcohol) while playing the games.. And there they go "I'm the most powerful in this world, nobody can defeat me! Muahaha"

i think 27hrs is a little bit too much for students i guess?
not saying poly students that require using the comp for school.
i meant those who are still in sec.
cause 27hrs is like 4hrs on avg per day.
thats a bit too much isn't it?
they wouldn't have much time to study. =/

lolx! Our generations whre got computer games? The closest to a computer game was that TV game that use rectangle blocks or Atari!
We spent most of our time outdoors hence I would say that we are more healthy and fitter at that age compared to those at that age now.
