Underwater World Singapore (UWS) has just welcomed a new addition to the shark family, the Zebra Horn Sharks.

Easily identifiable by the deep ridges behind their eyes and blunt snouts, the Zebra Horn Sharks (scientifically known as Heterodontus zebra) belong to one of the few groups of living sharks that have dorsal fin spines believed to be used as an anti-predator defense.

What makes the Zebra Horn Sharks distinct from the rest of the other horn sharks is the Zebra-like vertical stripes across their body, as their name suggests. Although they do not have the physique of the great white sharks or characteristic features for hunting like the long blade-like snouts edged with teeth of the saw sharks, the Zebra Horn Sharks possess a set of compressed teeth which can crush and grind even shelled prey.

"The Zebra Horn Sharks hardly fit the popular image of a shark. Yet the lesser-known sharks are fascinating in their own, pint-sized way. Aside from the beautiful body bands seen on the Horn Shark, another aesthetic aspect is the remarkable shape of the spiral-shaped or screw-like egg cases which the female horn sharks are known to lay," Anthony Chang, Curator at UWS said.

Toddlers from Cherie Hearts and young students from Fernvale Primary School's Media Club were treated to an exclusive preview of the Zebra Horn Sharks at UWS to kick start the June holidays.

UWS has provided this opportunity for students to experience a real media launch in a bid to both support the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity, as well as to educate and engage young minds in issues regarding marine life and conservation efforts.

"It is important to educate and expose the students to conservation issues at a young age. Apart from being aware of these issues, UWS wants these students to be inquisitive and start thinking of how they can be involved in marine conservation," Grace Ng, Deputy Director of Sales & Marketing at UWS commented.

After being introduced to the Zebra Horn Sharks, the toddlers of Cherie Hearts were also engaged in a marine storytelling session while immersed in the enchanting aquatic world surrounded by underwater creatures. It was followed thereafter by an eco-crafts lesson using recycled materials to encourage creativity in conservation.

Both activities are conducted by Bookaburra Books' storyteller, Denise Tan, and are offered as part of UWS' June holiday special weekend programme which will take place from May 31 to June 24. Visitors will also be treated to roving magic acts by students from Republic Polytechnic during this special period.

Re: Zebra Horn Sharks a new addition at Underwater World Singapore

It has been such a long time since I last went to this place. Perhaps I should go again soon to visit the new attractions/additions.
